car rental insurance
Has anyone not gotten the standard insurance through the rental car company but gotten excess insurance through an insurance company? My dad was told by his insurance company to look into that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you charge your car to a credit card, most likely the credit card company offers CDW (Collisoon Damage Waiver)insurance as part of their contract with you. This is really all the additional insurance you need. Check with your credit card company to make sure they offer this service and then decline the CDW when you are renting the car. There are some exceptions: Renting a car in Italy is one. There you have to get the CDW through the rental car company.

Carefully read the info from your credit card. Very often -- in order to get coverage from the cc, you must decline all other insurance. (doesn't apply to liability since that is automatically included in the rental rate)

American Express has Premium car rental insurance coverage that costs around $25 per rental. It's primary coverage up to $100,000 and there's no deductible.

Hi Dew,
In most of Europe the CDW from the rental agency comes with a deductible. You pay extra for "excess insurance" - zero deductible.
As noted, your CC company will usually give you zero deductible insurance. Read the contract as some things are not included.
The insurance you get does not cover you or your passengers - that's what the Amex people charge $25 for.
Third party liability (you hurt someone/thing else is included in the rental price).
Enjoy your visit.

As Ira says, even if you have CDW coverage there is nearly always a deductible "excess" payable on this in the event of damage/loss of the car. Not all credit card insurances will cover the CDW excess, so you must check the terms of this.
With regards to excess insurance through an insurance company, there is a website called www.insurance4carhire.com who offers this type of policy. Basically it makes the deductible excess REFUNDABLE by them if you have to fork out for damage. Auto Europe will give this insurance free of charge in some instances, and you can pay a damage excess waiver to companies like holiday autos as well with certain locations.
hope this helps!
