Typo or not, it was an understandable mistake. Many Anglophones are unable to pronounce bouche and būche differently.

Not perfect, but one of the techniques French teachers use to help English speakers with the pronunciation of the French vowel sound "u" or "ū" is to round the mouth to say "oo" then, without changing the mouth position, say "ee". This will get you closer to the French "u" sound.

My French teacher used to tell us to hold our noses shut with fingers to get that French nasal sound like in 'dans'

Belinda - ferme ta būche would also be acceptable.

New Year's Eve in Paris - where to eat?

My daughter and her family - M,F and two early teens - will be in Paris over New Year's and are planning to go to the festivities along the Champs Elyseé later. Can anyone suggest a restaurant for a nice - maybe even lively! - dinner on New Year's Eve - . Doesn't have to be five stars - but nice. Thanks very much!

Special dinners will be designed to last until midnight, so that would exclude going to the Champs Elysées.

xcountry,

cabovacation, go to thefork.com and put in your date and times. You'll get a good idea of what's available and the price. My favorite is La Reserve Paris, in the 8eme. Average meals 240 euro, Special NYE menu 900 euro! I wonder if that includes a glass of champagne at midnight.

So much more helpful information, thank you, everyone! Since no good deed goes unpunished...

I am looking for the name of a Traiteur (I think) near the Carrefour at 15 Rue de Buci that sells rotisserie chicken? On our last visit in 2013 the store was still there (with a little pig on the sign), but today I poked around Google Streetview and could not find the store. If the store no longer exists, suggestions within a reasonable distance of that address for take-away rotisserie chicken would be most appreciated.

Not for to-go chicken, but you are steps away from Le Bonaparte - my favorite bistro in Paris as well as several other Fodorites. Be sure to eat there on your trip. It was my first stop in Paris (pre Fodors) and is still my favorite.

I know the Bonaparte, and it is a perfectly respectable place, but my first thoughts whenever I see it mentioned are 1) "oh, that's the most ordinary café in the world" and 2) "why are people happy to pay 20% to go there?"

I do understand that the location obviously makes the rent higher than just about any other location in Paris, so obviously they have to charge more. Charm has a price.

Honestly, K. Is there ever going to be a time when someone shares a place they like and you don't dis it?

It is literally STEPS from the address she gave. STEPS.

Your constant criticism is ridiculous and one reason people no longer post here.

There are lots of places mentioned here of which I approve. And I did not dis the Bonaparte. The location is great for the Saint Germain addicts. It is certainly ten times better than the Deux Magots or the Flore. I just happened to mention that it is overpriced and not "outstanding." Can you prove otherwise?

And I fear that you grossly overestimate my influence here or on any other website if you believe that people no longer post because of me. If anything, I engender more posting when people contest what I say.

Read your post.
It's not up to me to "prove" one single thing.
Anyone who can read can see the "proof".

I wrote my post knowing full well that there was a 99% chance you'd show up and dis it.
I tried to prevent that.
I shared one reason why it's a sentimental favorite.
I shared that (unbeknownst to me when I first ate there) it's a favorite of several Fodorites.
And yet, that wasn't enough to prevent the dis.
And THAT is one reason so many people don't post on this forum anymore.
Including a Fodorite who goes to Paris on a regular basis, has for years and was waiting for me as I approached Le Bonaparte hours after my train arrived from London.

I didn't say it was the best. I said it was a favorite and it was STEPS away from where she is staying.
But that was obviously not enough to prevent the post I expected from you.
It would be different if you dissed a place and offered an alternative.
NO. That's not going to happen. Just a snarky comment about a recommendation someone else likes.
I think I need to join the others who have given up on Fodors. It's simply not worth the time and energy. These forums are already as dead as a doornail - and this is one main reason why. A perfectly innocent and benign recommendation met by that kind of response. So much good advice not given by former Fodorites who got tired of this crap long before I have.

Take my word for it.

Perhaps you have eaten something a bit off today? I see from your post count that you have posted more than 3 times more than me (and I already think that I post too much) but you are perhaps reaching burnout? If you post messages like what you have just done, it is more likely that you are the one driving people away from the forum than me.

OP--I am sure it is not a cheap place to go but the food was all so very beautiful at the Grand Epicerie, next to the LeBon. It is reasonably close to the 6th. Since we did not have a kitchen, I did not look at prices. However, I bought decorative sugars and cookie decorations there, which were fun.

I also really liked St. Sulpice and wish I could have heard the organ there.

The pastry shop we really liked in the 6th: http://maison-mulot.com/

What a charmer. Not in the last year or so and very rarely in the Europe forum.

Everyone knows you despise St. Germain. Everyone knows you prefer budget meals. That's fine. That's a valid choice. Not a single thing wrong with that.

What I don't understand is, given that, why you still post snarky comments about and in response to posters who DO like to stay there and don't care about the 20% you seem to stress about. Do I really care that something that is 18 euros at Le Bonaparte may cost 15 euros at another restaurant in the city? No. But let's just say that I am. What's wrong with sharing a restaurant that you prefer to Le Bonaparte that is your precious 20% less expensive. Then you are giving the reader a choice to make = travel to another area in the city and/or another restaurant in the city... and to decide if that travel time is worth 3 euros.

I'm sure I'll never understand your snarky comments about St. Germain. If you don't like it, why post in threads when people are planning to stay there? The only reason seems to be not to pass up on a chance to criticize their choice. Why make snarky comments about restaurants suggested that are mere steps from the address they just gave - but NO alternate suggestion given. If the goal was to offer good travel advice, then offer good travel advice. Instead you opt to make snarky comments about places in Paris you don't like. When is the last time you've eaten at Le Bonaparte? How do you know it's as bad as you think it is? Based on your posts, I can't imagine the last time you've eaten there. I've probably eaten there a dozen times more often and more recently than you.

People get tired of it. People have left this forum because of it. Even knowing it would happen, expecting it to happen, trying to prevent it from happen, it happened...again. Why bother? Obviously I'm slower than the Fodorites who no longer post here because of it.

Fourfortravel, consider the Bonaparte. It is the favorite of many.

Here's another suggestion on rue de Buci - L'Atlas.
I went because another Fodorite (who rarely posts here anymore) recommended it. She suggested the Chicken Fricasse - and it was very good. The restaurant is also known for oysters but I ordered a shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. It was the most amazing shrimp cocktail I've ever had! Huge. I just checked TA reviews and they vary widely. But here's a review by a real fan - and friend.

Starrs:

I will be in Paris in a few weeks for our annual pre-Christmas long weekend. It is a given that we will pop into Le Bonaparte at least once a day for either a morning coffee or a late afternoon wine or three. It is our "local". Will also be staying at "our" hotel which will be very festive with the Christmas decor. (A highlight of the day is coming back and sitting by the fire.) Yesterday we had a pre-trip meeting to discuss our plans and , of course, there are none. We are happy just wandering around all day with zero game plan.
