Christmas markets in Munich-need hotel/pension recommendations

My boyfriend and I will be going to Munich at the end of November for the opening of the Christmas market. We will also be going on a one day trip to Nurnburg for their Christmas market. Does anyone have any good hotel or pension recommendations in Munich? I'm looking for something that's not too expensive (hopefully under $100),clean,private bathroom and centrally located. Also, although I'm going to Munich for the Christmas market, it is my first time there. Can anyone suggest any "must see" sights and good restaurants? Thanks.

Funny, you should ask. I was in another travel forum couple days ago and printed out info on Christmas markets in Munich. Go into www.eurotrip.com -click on travel boards and then click on "Places" go down to about 9/25 and look for the heading Re: Christmas in Europe. There is lots of good info there. Perhaps you can E mail one of them and ask about pensions.

In my Frommers' guide he claims Munichs best pension is Pension beim Haus der Kunst-"Noted for its ideal location near the Englischer Garten, its copious breakfasts and warm hospitatlity this inexpensive and well run small pension is one of munichs best.. 1 apt w/private bath all others share- ph 089/22-21-27 fax is 089/834-8248 apt(w/bath) $63, dbl is $140 for 4 people

Peggy, If you are traveling by train, you want to be near the station. They have a pretty good tourist information booth in the station if you need the help. The station is at one of the ends of the Marienplatz. The market is mostly located in front of the Rathaus, at the other end. I have stayed by the station on a couple of visits and had no problems. Another time we had a car and parking was the main concern. We stayed at one of the pensions listed in Rick Steves book which had easy parking. I would recommend that you consult his website or book for pensions/ hotels in Munich. Being close to the English Garden will just make a longer walk or a underground trip into the Marienplatz. There are plenty of hotels by the station area. I would say that you must pay a visit to the Hofbrau House, for at least a look around. The Rathaus has some pretty good food, a little pricey if I remember. You could visit the Residenz or the Duetsches Museum if you have some time. If you are going to Nurenburg take a walk upto the fortress for a great view of the city. Also keep an eye out for the elderly man dressed as ST. Nicholas playing the Herdy - Gerdy in the street. Take at look at www.christkindlesmarkt.de for info on the Nurenburg market. Try to attend the childrens latern parade on the 11th (you might be home already??) It is a treat ! I would avoid the Nurenburg market on a weekend if possible. It can be very busy on a weekday, since many tours/groups end up there.
Have some gluhwein (a hot spiced wine) and some saugage to make you trip complete. Enjoy!!

I was in Munich in July and stayed at Uhland Hotel. The rooms were nice; close to train (walking distance); and the prices were well within your budget. The staff is very helpful. Breakfast included in the room rates. You can book on-line (http://www.munich-online.de/uhland/enuhlandof.html). I learned about the hotel here reading some other posts. I would stay there again. I took my Granddaughter with me on this trip (her birthday present from me)--she loved the hotel. Habe a great time!
