If we all chunnel our energies I think we could come up with a better less conroversial name for that thing that trains go thru under La Manche - a name equally English and French - Franglais they call it.
For Example:
<La Manchunnel> - sounds perfect to moi.

TravelParis23, that is not an official website! It even says so at the bottom of the page:
<i>"Chunnel.org.uk is for guidance and information purposes only. Chunnel.org.uk is not an official web site of any of the cross Channel operators."</i>

Chunnel.org.uk is a UK site - enough said - even common Brits and uncommon ones like annhig use Chunnel.
and eurostar.com is the official Chunnel trains site.
There should be no debate about this -folks call it what they want and everyone understands -i can not see why anyone bothers about that.
Kind of like insisting the instead of U.K. we use the term United Kingdom.
I could care less who calls it what as long as everyone understands. Foreigners call NYC the Big Apple often and so what?

That's funny! when I go to the website on my own they call it "The Channel Tunnel". Maybe Chunnel is for Americans? ;-)

BTW, if you scroll through this thread you will never see where I said you can't call it "The Chunnel".

exactly - point everyone not American and a few clueless Americans here can't wrap their heads around in their didactic march to tunnel vision.

Considering there is a time difference between the UK and most of mainland Europe maybe it should be called the Time Chunnel.>>
is there anywhere where there isn't at least an hour's difference, ribeirasacra?
[answering my own Q, Portugal! That's a surprise].

Ann, really it is Spain which is out of position as it should be on the same time as Portugal, Ireland, UK.
I've skimmed through the above and I'm sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious which has been covered above but the new name of the holding company is changing, not the name of the actual business.
A bit like Google is owned by "Alphabet".
I assume that they are now about to start buying other infrastucture debt as part of becomin a more unfocused business.

bilbo - I've no idea what they intend to do in future, however I do know one of the bankers who put the original financing together as he is the husband of the GF I am going to stay with in Kent in a week or so's time. Sadly I will not be able to discuss any of this with him as he has vascular dementia.
Good point about its being Spain that is out of step rather than Portugal.

It was Hitler who imposed "Berlin time" on most of the continent. And this has proved to be convenient most of the time for most of us who travel. After 70 years, one gets used to it. However, I have read that Spain is considering changing time zone, which does indeed seem logical since it is so far west. It would be quite happy with Portugal and the British Isles in the same time zone.

France was on GMT from 1911 to 1940.
Before 1911, it was on "Paris time" which was something like 18 minutes off GMT but which reflected the correct solar time for Paris. Before 1891, each city had its own time, and it was only when railway timetables had to be published that it became necessary to unify France into a single time zone.

It was the same in the UK, kerouac. Apparently it was first adopted by the GWR in 1840, and was known as Railway time. As the railways spread, they all adopted it and it came to be known as London time, and which was set by the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, hence Greenwich Mean Time.
