We are going on a Rail holiday in January to the Alps - wht is best to wear given that part of the time will be in heated trains and part outdoors in the mountains

Hello Tony!<BR><BR>Layers is the way to go! Next to a warm jacket or a coat (possibly with a hood), bring also gloves, scarf, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and most important, good and rain/snow-proof shoes.

I wear long johns one time and one time only.....Europe in the winter. They are a must as you can take normal pants and were the long johns (or not) as needed. This is a must take item and the new ones are really easy to pack.

Your question is good - being in heated trains wearing extremely warm clothing can be incredibly uncomfortable. So the advice about taking layers sounds spot-on. Stuff like fleece is good, because it's lighter than wool coats, etc. Also depends on what kind of &quot;body heat&quot; - for some, long underwear is just too suffocating; for others, it's a godsend. Bring one pair maybe and see if you need it. <BR><BR>I've found that, if it ever gets really frigid in the Alps (and sometimes with wind, the temp. can really feel cold!), a sort of protective face mask or cover is handy. They're not heavy to pack; some are made with lightweight neoprene or some such material. Also, try out hats that have ear flaps and tie around your chin - they make pretty cool stuff now, so you won't look like a nerd...

I would prefer a neck gator to a face mask xxx. Wear them like a turtle neck but can pull them up over your chin and nose. Look a lot more sophisticated, too. lol Come in lovely colors at your ski/sport shop. Rip it off when you get hot. Also, there are headbands made for skiing that cover your ears or ear muffs are always fun if a hat with ear flaps isn't your thing.
