I think I have found justification for NEVER visiting New York. The probability of meeting NYCFoodSnob is indeed small, but should such a meeting occur .....

Maybe the better question would be...why?

I've been pickpocketed in my home town and had one attempt in Paris (but didn't lose anything that time.) I feel like I have to be just as vigilant here as I do anywhere and certainly do not let that deter me from going where I wish to go.

Rien63, you might consider a group tour if you think that would make you more comfortable. Paris and Rome are two of my favorite places in the world and I would hate for you to miss them.

What did you do? Go to Venice and stalk him?

Yeah, spooky really is the right word.

I wanted to add something irrational, but it has all been taken. (Must be quicker next time.)

I think joining a tour group, since you are so fearful, is an excellent idea.

Tour groups are a good idea in one sense, since the guide will make sure you get to where you want to go.

However, large groups of tourists tend to feel that there is "safety in numbers" when they are all together, and many let down their guard when they are off the bus - which is when pickpockets strike. It's a big problem with Asian tour groups in Paris, at the moment.

I would pay much more attention to my belongings if I were going with a large group.

I just by chance today revisited another topic on Fodors, where Snobby unleashes her graceful, ballerina-like venom:

<< "As for Rick, nobody knows him outside US"

What an absolutely ridiculous and TOTALLY INCORRECT thing to say. I wish the self-important big mouths on this board would stop pretending they speak for millions of people when they spout their self-absorbed opinions.

I know for a fact that in the European travel industry, Rick Steves is as famous, if not more famous, than Auto Europe. These days, you'd have to be a moron, or an absolute non-traveler, to not know either. >>

Of course there is no "subject or verb" [sic] in this attribution, but we all know the Pariswat was the recipient of this gentle reprimand. It seems an over-reaction to a rather innocuous statement, but maybe "moron" is less derogatory than "idiot".

Welllllll of course lots of people know about RS outside the United States.. thousands and thousands of Canadians know his shows.. watch them, buy his books, and take his tours.. I know two myself that have.

And on said tour..my one friend met an Australian family.. so thinking that yes.. yes people do know who RS is outside of the United STates.

However I do not think he is well known at all in Europe.. why would he be ..since apparently his books are all in English. Only ones who likely know about him are hotels and restaurants in his guidebooks or in areas he promotes heavily ( since then his readers flock there in droves.. I had never even heard of "Rue Cler" until RS.. and had been to Paris for many years many trips before his promoting that one little street or some small towns( poor cinque Terra.. lol )

Why is the Original Poster now banned from the site?
When I click the name, I get a Fodor-404.

Pariswat provides very good information, regardless of what your opinion of his opinions is...he is a wealth of excellant first hand hotel and restaurant recommendations on Paris at least, since he travels there for business as frequently as you visit your grocery store!
