My daughter is traveling from ATL to Stockholm this weekend, with a short layover in Copenhagen. She is meeting family on the Stockholm end.

My question is - I want her to have a little cash in case she needs it in the Copenhagen airport, as well as in Stockholm, in case there's a delay or problem with her family member meeting her on that end.

Neither country use Euros in general currency - but would cash Euros be acceptable at airports?

She will have a credit card, but I also want to her have a little cash.

More important: how's she going to get by in Sweden normally? Surely she's going to have a debit card to get Swedish kronor with?

I'm really, really struggling to think of anything you can't use a debit or credit card for in Copenhagen or Stockholm. I don't mean their airports, but in the entire cities.

Using cards for even trivial things has long been a point of pride throughout Scandinavia.

I can't see the point of Euros. If you're buying currency before she leaves, why buy a currrency neither country uses? Euros are no more, and no less, useful than US dollars or Swiss francs. If you want a bit of cash, she'll get no more ripped off changing dollars at an exchange booth in the airport than changing euros. But she won't need to do that, so if she takes her home currency with her, she can take it back home untouched.

Net: Take dollars, and if you really crave comfort, buy a few Swedish kronor. But above all: make sure she's got a debit card.

In most large international airports, merchants can accept euros, dollars, or pounds as well as the local currency, but will give change in the local currency only. So dollars plus a credit card will likely be all she needs; if necessary she can use dollars to buy a few kroner at a CPH exchange booth.

She will have a credit card for emergencies, won't she?

At least at CPH, dollars are fine, as are credit cards of every stripe. There are several fx booths and ATMs, should she want them. Even the hot dog stands take pretty much any major currency.

In short, give her dollars. Yes, she will get hit with the fx rate, but she will get hit once. If you give her Euros, then she gets hit twice - once to EUR and again to DKK or SEK.

Thank you folks - yes, she will have a credit card and debit card. All I was really wondering about was those 2 hours in Copenhagen - if it would be good for her to have some cash. But you've answered that question very helpfully!

To avoid getting stuck with a lot of Danish currency as change from buying a snack with dollars in CPH, be sure she has some small bills.
