dangerous to travel to Europe in summer 2003

My family of 4 have been planning our dream trip to London, Paris and Venice. With the current situation in the U.S., would we be taking a large risk to travel this June?

You would take no extra risk. At home and in Europe you have a remote chance of an extremist bomb.

Ben Haines
hannah: My family and I also have our dream vacation planned during "THE WAR". I am also concerned. SOme people have told me that we will probably be safer in Europe. When are you going?

I don't see any reason not to go. Most places in Europe would actually be safer than the US when and if the US/Un launch an attack on Iraq. The UK might be one excpetion. The only other problem you might have is air travel. During the first few days of any attack, it would be my expectation that the US will stop or severely restrict air travel to and from the US. You might therefore have to spend a few unexpected days here in Europe if you departure dates coincide with an attack. Screening proceudres will probably be even tighter than they are now, so delays are sure to occur.

Within Europe, flight security will be very tight and long delays are possible. I could see this extending to train travel, although there are currently no screeing procedures in place at train stations in Europe that I am aware of.

I've had the same concerns because we are going to Italy and France in July and we've been planning for some time.

I finally came to the conclusion that I'm not going to let any war stop our long planned trip, but I do expect more delays. However, I keep hearing that our safety shouldn't be of any concern.

I agree with the other posters. Europe will probably be a lot safer than the US or many other parts of the world if war comes.

Should I be concerned about a late March-early April trip to Sicily?? I'm not, but am wondering if I should be.

Ok, Here is the opposite....I haven't been back to America since 1 month after 9/11. I am nervous flying to the States. I went to Boston in November after 9/11 and just before we left to go to the airport we saw a plane crashed in Rockaway, queens and at the time we did not know that it was an accident. There were Military MP's at the securoty check in and I was checked 3 times...I don't know why but it always happens and I don't think I look like a terrorist. It made me uncomfortable ever since and I have stayed in Europe as I felt safer. I know there is absolutely no basis to feel unsafe and I will be back for a visit soon. Ben is correct in that it would be a remote chance of any extremist bombs and security has been heightened in europe same as the USA to avert any problems. SO go and enjoy!

I'd say France and Germany should be exceptionally safe!

The cheapest air fare I've ever purchased to Europe was during the Gulf War of 1990/1991. I also got TRIPLE frequent flier miles, which earned me a second, free ticket to Europe.

Hannah:
I am off to Paris and to Spain in May traveling alone joining an escorted tour and my husband and kids are staying home.
For now I'm not too worried about it yet until the tour company cancels - my philosophy in life is if it is your time where ever you are be at home or somewhere else that's it you can't control it so live your life to the fullest!
Go for it!

I'm taking a family trip to italy in june that i postponed from last year because of 9/11 security fears. At this point I feel like there's no point in waiting for the world to become a safer place. My biggest concern are the trains because there appears to be absolutely no security there. (If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know!) Otherwise, we probably will not use the spanish steps mcdonald's for our bathroom stops -- that's my only must avoid

I am considering cancelling my annual summer vacation in Europe this year. I usually have purchased my ticket by now.

The reason I have no interest this year is because of the Bush war and all the anti-American comments to me which I have no doubt will happen. Europeans get very political when the US is seen as pushing its weight around. I just don't want the hassles and personal attacks when I am tryng to just get along with fellow travelers and locals.

I will be called a whimp, etc. by posters but its My vacation and I am not going to waist my time and money to have a bad time.

I don't think Europeans "get" political, they already have the (unfortunately) correct impression (well deserved) that we are pushing our weight around. This is not new news. Hope the current adminstration backs off from a situation which is likely to include hand to hand combat with twelve year old boys. I hope no one has to put up with too many "comments" on their vacation, and I am amazed as usual at the priorities expressed here. Those of us still lucky enough to afford vacation time in this economy are well-blessed!
I am going, and have no doubts about being able to get along with others. To me, anti-American comments are a wonderful opportunity to keep communication alive directly, so the rest of the world doesn't assume that America is of one mind regarding a war. I am glad for the chance to go!!!.

I'm joining my husband for a business trip to Italy in March. I will go, but this is making me crazy. I am particulary concerned since our kids will be home without us. Even though they will be with family, I would rather we be here should something happen in the states. We are also flying on different planes to hopefully ensure that at least one of us would get back safely.
You are still more likely to be killed in a car accident on your way to the airport than by any terrorist action.

Help me out with this one, please! If Iraq is not a threat to the US (either directly or through its support of terrorism), why would anyone be concerned for their safety in the US in the event of war?
