Tom - give it up. Why do you think it is strange that a lot of visitors are caught in summer. Summer is when the vast majority of foreigners visit/drive . . . And most locals know where the speed cameras are.
You did owe the money and if you had cancelled the cc you'd still owe the money and would likely take a hit to your credit rating.
