Drive from Munich to Frankfurt via mittenwald?
We will be in Paris from Sept 18 to Sept 24 then flying out of orly ( DBA/AIRBERLIN) to Munich for Oktoberfest (9/24-9-26) then leaving for Frankfurt by way of rented Opal from Alamo. My question is. Our first stop will be at the Alpenrose hotel in Mittenwald Germany for one night(09/26) then, three nights to make our way to Frankfurt ( We have a hotel in Frankfurt at the Steigenberger Airport Hotel Frankfurt 09/29)
Where do you suggest we drive in those three days? My wife wants to see the romantic road but I told her it is too far from where we start? Is it possible? Thank you. I would also ask a question about Paris but you experts would run me over the coals! LOL J/K

some nice options from Mittenwald would include the Bavarian Alpine Road, a marked road west along the foothills of the Alps or take the Romantik Road route north to Rothenburg and then take the Castle Road to Heidelburg - i think the Castle Rd is much more scenic than Romantik Road - follows Neckar Valley much of way and need little towns not nearly so overrun with tourists as Romantik Road towns.

Mittenwald to Frankfurt via the Romantic Road would not be the fastest route as the RR is not an Autobahn, but it certainly is not out of the way. Compared to the fastest, Autobahn-heavy route, it would probably increase your actual driving time over the 3 days by 2 or 3 hours.
Another option would be north to Nuernberg and Bamberg, then west to Frankfurt.

>This is our first time in Germany. Which route do you think we could see somewhat real German way of life? Thank you.
Germany is not a country where int'l tourism permeates everything (with the exception of a few points like Neuschwanstein). So whatever you see will be more or less what you look for.

Last summer we drove most of the Romantic Road and we spent a few days in Nuremberg and the surrounding area. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose the Nuremberg option. We enjoyed the Romantic Road, but through that Nuremberg and that area was more interesting.

If it was me I would start in Mittenwald (Alpenrose is an authentic gasthaus type hotel, we loved it). Go to Garmish (about 10 miles away) and go up the Zugspitze. Then go to Ettal Monastary, Schloss Linderhoff, Oberammergau and the Wiessekirche on your way to Fussen. After you see the castles in Fussen you can head north to the Castle road with maybe a stop in Rothenberg. then see the Necker River Valley. Heidleberg is in the area also.
The distances are not that great and you can see a lot of the charm of Germany in a short time. Have fun! and don't be afraid to ask your Paris questions. The people on this board love to share our knowlege and love of travel.

Firstly, I'd be sure you've seen some of Bavaria's beauties near to Mittenwald - Zugspitze, Oberammergau, Wieskirche, a Ludwig castle, etc - prior to leaving the area.
Next, the "Romantic Road" is not a 'road' as such; it's a series of towns. Head towards Nördlingen by way of Landsberg am Lech, then north to Dinkelsbühl, then Rothenburg o.d. Tauber.
Another target or option would be Bamberg and from there on to Frankfurt.

easy day Mittenwald to Rothenburg - say what you want about it being too touristed but it's touristed for good reason - oneof Europe's finest walled old towns.
easy day from there to Heilelberg - infinitely nicer for tourists than Karlsrhue
Heidelberg is very close to Frankfurt.
If going to Karlsrhue then consider driving thru the Black Forest area and up a gorge like valley to Karlsrhue.

Get a map of Germany and highlight the towns people have listed here then when you get specific about which roads to take check ViaMichelin.com They will give you options of taking the scenic road, the fast road, the least expensive route etc.
