Driving between Budapest and Zagreb

HI! We're driving between Budapest and Zagreb soon and I was wondering if there were any sights in between. All the books are kind of vague about the area other than that Lake Balaton is nice, but does anybody have any suggestions? Where have you guys been?

I haven't, but as an avid Croatia fan I have done some research. This should help you get started at least: There are castles in the hill country surrounding Zagreb.
Varazdin is reputedly a beautiful baroque town.

Def check this out:

This may help as well:

I'd say your best best are Lake Balaton and Varazdin, depending on how much time you have.

I guess you have already looked into int'l rental car drop off fees, and all that jazz?

Please share your adventures--it is an area I am eager to visit and it is nice to hear about other parts of Croatia besides the coast.

hayestrip,

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question, but we, too are avid fans of Croatia and want to do more exploration of the country. I'll be interested to hear about your drive to Budapest, too; how long it takes you, what challenges you encounter (I can't imagine driving in the Balkans without challenges , what you visit along the way, etc. Hopefully you'll prove me wrong about the challenges! Hope you have a great trip.

I agree that Varazdin might be a good choice - I found it quite enjoyable, along with nearby Cakovec. Hope that helps!
