Father/daughter trip to Barcelona, Girona, Alicante and Morocco!

Hello all! Well, my dad confirmed today the purchase of a rountrip ticket, DFW-BCN arriving Nov. 29th and leaving December 15th. We will spend the first days in BCN, then down to Alicante for some host family action, then back to BCN to depart for Morocco for a week (thank you, puente de la Constitución!!!) seeing the desert and Marrkech, then back to Barcelona for a few days, with a day trip to Girona. In Girona, we want to go to the Celler de Can Roca (we are renting a car) for dinner. Maribel, do you have that info? I have misplaced it.

As for BCN, he will se the sights while I work and then we will do stuff together (lots of good meals), so a trip report is in order. I am finding great fares to Morocco for travelers on those dates.

In the past, the King spent winters in Marrakech. I don't know if that's the case with Mohammad VI.

You'll have to travel some distance from Marrakech to see the sand (reg) desert. Years ago, I drove down to Asni, a ski resort in the Grand Atlas mountains and all I recall seeing is the erg desert, arid w/stones. There should be skiing that time of year, though.

In Marrakech, we stayed at the Mamounia (then a 5-star hotel - I think the Casino was there, or close by). The Djema 'l Fna (Gate of the Sun) in the old city is quite impressive.

laclaire - I know you have been to all these places before but it will be fun to go with your dad. I will look forward to any new finds you discover as we will be doing similar trip (incl. daytrip to Girona, but no plans for Alicante) in March.

Love: we are both super excited. My Dad just won a camping backpack from the Sierra Club and is going to use it for our Morocco portion.

Nedsireland: Last year it took us just over 12 hours to get to the real desert (as in just yellow yellow sand), and I think we are going to use the same tour group I did. We had a good experience and I know where there office is and how it works. For me, seeing the desert is like the Mediterranean: you can go back a million times and it is still different. I would like to take my Dad up to the Atlas Mts., though.

jgg- Yes, I have been to all these places, but it is always different with someone else there. For example, the last time I was in Girona, it was to visit a friend from there and I spent the whole time in private homes. This time I will see a lot of Girona and we will eat at a really nice restaurant. I will keep you informed about the whole thing.

I have already told my dad that on day 1 we are going shopping in Marrakech for new djellabahs and clothes. I am also working on a reservation for Yacoub.

Hi laclaire,
Lucky duck! I'm sure you and your dad will have a wonderful adventure. You'll get to the Celler de Can Roca before we do, so take good notes! It's closed Sun./Mon. It's outside the city on Carretera Taiala 40.
Phone: 972 22 21 57

And missypie needs your expert advice regarding location of apts. in the Eixample.

I got the desert types mixed up: 'erg' desert is the yellow sand one and the 'reg' desert is the flat, arid, rocky one. I guess I need a refresher course in Geography.

Check with Moroccan authorities before taking a tour across the Atlas mountains (to where the sand deserts are). You may run into some nasty people east of Ouarzazate: Algerians who have a continuing border dispute with Morocco and who have just allied their movement with AlQaeda. I don't think you would want to mess with that bunch.

Yeah, a friend and I are applying for visas to Algeria, but it is looking very dangerous for right now. The press isn't really covering what is quite the boiling point.
