Ferry tickets among Greek islands
Hello
We are going to Greece in two weeks. We will stay on several islands. My question is can we buy ferry tickets after we arrive ? If so, do people buy tickets at the ports? I checked online tickets. They all charge high service fees. So I would rather buy at the ports. Any advice?
Thanks

Yes, you can buy ferry tickets once you arrive, either at a travel agent or at the port. We have booked online before and don't think we paid service fees, have a look at Greek Ferries | Ferries to Greece | Ferry Crete-Santorini I found it pretty user friendly. One thing to check is where you can pick up the tickets from. It needs to be somewhere you can easily access.
The upside of booking last minute at the port is you should know by then what time the ferry will actually depart. When we've booked ahead sometimes the departure time has been hours later than the original time.

The reason you saw high service fees is you were looking at third party websites rather than the ferry companies own websites, which charge no service fees at all. Since you are travelling early season when ferries aren’t full, you can wait until you get to Greece, then choose the ferries departing at the most convenient times for you. To plan your itinerary go to gtp.gr or openseas.gr.

AnnPA, I never book ferries in advance, but never wait until the day of sailing, either. If you book as soon as you reach each island you will have the peace of mind to know you are sorted for the next destination. In the meantime, in case you change your mind, some of the ferry company websites are:

If you use the www.gtp.gr website, you will find the links to the relevant ferry company just below the timetables.

Stay in touch with the local news while you're there. A ferry strike was planned while we were on Santorini, when we needed to get back to Athens for our flight home. Luckily, our concierge was on top of it, and advised us to get a flight quickly. We did that, and were happy to get off the island. Many people were stuck there and missed flights or other places they were headed to. The strike was specifically planned for two or three particular days, so it was not a surprise unless you weren't paying attention to local news.

Check for offers and discounts on each ferry company's site. Hellenic Seaways for instance has this e-pass for Greek island hopping. Blue Star Ferries has economy offers for the Cyclades as well. I always check there sites. Another year I had found a 1+1 offer if you had a specific sell phone provider. Yeah, definitely check the news.. That strike mentioned above was a real bummer. A friend of mine had booked separate tickets for 3 islands and had to changed them all afterwards :/ call that a bad luck pppfff. Though, I think there won't be any strikes during high season. Let's keep our hopes up. I've got tickets and accommodation ready for Mykonos... at the end of the month <3 soooo excited!!!
