I was fully aware of what you explain in your second comment, but did not know that some credit cards do not charge for purchases. Using several different cards which had charged me additional fees for purchases abroad, I assumed it was universal among American issuers. Your post prompted me to do some quick spot research. On an e-opinion website, updated Jan 7, '05, I found the following:
" . . .Capital One, MBNA America, FleetBoston, and Wachovia Bank are not charging extra fees on foreign transactions at this time. Furthermore, most credit unions and community banks don't charge these extra fees either."
This is revealing. Thanks for the enlightening comments, and I guess I'll be sending in some applications myself.
