First trip to Coastal Italy- help! young and clueless in italy :)

First trip to italy, looking to stay somewhere non-commercial in Cortona or Cecina.

We (two of us)would like to rent a villa or apartment for five days or so, within walking distance to a fresh market. (any great places?)

We want to walk or rent bicycles ( any bike rentals in Cortona or Cecina?)

Nearest car rental spot from either Cortona or Cecina?
Travel to Florence for a night (any suggestions for a reasonably priced place to stay in Florence would be greatly appreciated)

We are young and on a budget, so any suggestions on the best flight plan? Which city is best to fly into? we don't mind taking a train from a city in Italy to the coast, or even from France if that is cheaper. Any ideas or suggestions about cheaper flights, and train information would be greatly appreciated! We are in the dark so far.

Any suggestions on any of the above would be awesome, thanks so much!

Lyndsey, just a gentle reminder that presenting yourself as young and clueless and in the dark might invite trouble! This is the same advice I'd give my daughters when they plan trips...

I can highly recommend the B&B Peterson.

Well, redawy, you may consider yourself clueless, but I've been to Italy many times and you are one step ahead of me. I never knew that Cortona was a coastal city. I even thought it was a hill town almost evenly spaced between the two coasts of Italy.
What are you looking for? A hill town or a place on the coast?
