its an overnight flight so they will be sleeping nicely and ready to run when we reach rome.

Sounds much more do-able.... if you don't feel too let down at not seeing Venice. Love both Florence and Orvieto. As for a car, we really like Kemwel and always call rather than book online. They can give really good information about exactly where different car rental offices are located, for ease etc. I like their zero deductible for ease of mind, though we do have a credit card that is supposed to cover any insurance issues. You will probably want to rent in one city and drop off in Rome. (Or a smaller town outside of Rome, which is always our preference to keep things calm.)

So many choices of Agriturismo locations and types.... with kids, I find a pool to be a WONDERFUL thing. Nothing tires out kids for a good night's sleep like an hour of swimming!
