StCirq, if your typical lunch expenditure in the USA is around $25-30 per person, than I'd agree with you. Mine is about half of that.

Will you be renting apartments or staying in hotels?

That will make a difference.

Will you be shopping for food at markets and be happy with meals simple picnics of deli meats, cheeses, fresh fruits and bread?

Or will you require a restaurant for most meals?
Are you happy with a sandwich and a brat?

How big of a deal is food to you? I know one has to eat of course, but for some people a vacation is, in part if not whole, about food. For my husband and I, it's not a big deal and we don't like to sit around in a lot of restaurants. A few is tolerable but more than one a day is boring for me.

It depends upon you.

we don't like to sit around in a lot of restaurants. It's expensive and it's also a huge waste of TIME, which - for every tourist - is essential...

Hi LSky - We will be in hotels, except Vienna where it is a BB, but all B/F included. We are not so keen on lavish meals, but with 2 youngsters around, can't be too tight on food either. Hope a budget of average 200 Euros per day should b reasonable.

we have taken several holidays with our older teens and they eat as much if not more than we do.

i've posted this before [and might not get the figures exactly right] but this is our sort of budget:

Breakfast - between €3-5 each.

Midday drink - say €4 each [coffees and soft drinks tend to be dearer than a glass of wine, and watch the cost of that spremuta!]

Lunch - between €10 [for a sandwich and drink] to €15 [for a light sit down lunch] each

afternoon gelato - €2-3 each

dinner - €20-25 each. [we drink alcohol, our kids don't]

total - between €40 and €52 each per day.

that is by no means lavish. you will find it most difficult to stick to in Switzerland, and easiest in Austria. staying in apartments will make it go further.

Do the math, mamamia2. My typical lunch in the US isn't close to $25-$30 per person, but the OP is talking about lunch AND dinner for 4 adults, in Europe. Comes out to just about what annhig said, and I did as well - $200 a day.

mamamia2, I couldn't agree with you more. I like eating lunch at museum cafes. They're often very good and like you, it saves some time

To each their own.

We do picnics because we enjoy parks and light hiking too.

DennisA, you'll be fine with your budget. Europe is like every where else, we all find something for our budget Have a wonderful trip.

Dennis A - sorry, I misread your first post about not including breakfast and liquor.

Hope it all works out...

We don't spend that much money on food. I love to go to the grocery store for snacks, love trying what the locals eat. We did one five course dinner in Normandy last month but still was under 85.00 for both of us and a half bottle of wine. Picnics are my fav and we love bakeries. Switzerland was crazy expensive imo. Pub grub is always great. We didn't spend that much even in Paris. We were so tired after walking all day that we would grab something and take back to the apartment. You can do that in a hotel.
