Gatwick, Stansted lodging?

We will have one night near Gatwick on our way to Italy and one night near Stansted on our way home. Any recommendations? We won't have time to go into London, but I'd rather be in a B&B in a village than a hotel right at the airport so we could walk around a little. Would need to have airport pick-up/drop off service.

In Gatwick, try a B&B in Horley which is only a few minutes drive to the airport.

We stayed in Springwood Guesthouse before an early flight to the US. They dropped us off at the airport and picked us up when we returned (I'm not sure if this was because we were leaving our car with them while we were away or not). See www.springwoodguesthouse.co.uk

There are lots of B&Bs in the same road and it's a few minutes walk from Horley with places to eat/drink.

We have stayed at Gable End Guest House prior to a early flight back to the US www.gable-end.com or listed at www.smoothhound.co.uk We had a rental car that we were returning to Gatwick so can not comment on their pick up/drop off service. We had a very nice meal at a pub within walking distance called Ye Olde Six Bells recommended by this B&B.

Can not personally recommend a B&B near Stansted but look on the smoothhound site and click on B&B's near a airport for some suggestions.

The Arora Hotel(Gatwick) is a great place to stay before or after a long trip. It is right in the town of Crawley;has the Gatwick Express train that runs right adjacent to it(can use it to get from Gatwick,go into London or down to Brighton). The hotel has free ground transportation to Gatwick with a health club on site;newstand, several different restaurants and even a coffee stand in the main lobby.

Hi R,

We enjoyed our stay at http://www.gatwickbelmont.com/

They have free shuttle service to/from Gatwick.

We stayed at a totally unmemorable and overpriced "country" hotel advertising itself as convenient to Stansted a couple of years ago. Yes, it was convenient for the taxi driver.

There are a couple of attractive-looking hotels in Bishops Stortford (esp. the George - the bar was nice anyway... )that also would offer some places to walk to - pubs, cafes etc. that are an improvement over airport hotels et al. The cab ride to/from the airport is quite affordable.
