German gas stations

Are they "self service" the way they are in America? Or must an attendant pump the fuel for one's car?

I got into big trouble a few years ago while we were in Germany and started to pump the gas myself while stopping in a small town. A lady burst out of the station and insisted that she must put the gas into our car. She soon saw I was an American -- and all was forgiven.

Incidentally, how much does gasoline cost per liter in Germany these days? Just approximately, of course.

About 1.25€ per liter and 1.05€ for Diesel in Munich. Self service everywhere since the mid 1970ies. I would start pumping myself too. However, the just last week at the station, they installad a sign "We operate the pump for you, if you want it".

I doubt anybody would actually use this service. I mean, should you tip the guy??

99% are self service, however different from the USA. You drive to the pump, take the right nozzle for the sort you want to tank, start pumping and after you have finished you walk to the cashier. 95% of gas stations (all major brands) take MasterCard and VISA.

The only thing you need to know is how to say the number of your pump in German to the cashier. "Zwei!" "Fünf!" "Acht!"

just think...I would never really have known how thick underarm hair on a woman could get without those 1970s full service gas stations in Germany.
