At Santa Anita racetrack in the private Turf Club I was watching my horse win and a man took the opportunity to grab my purse right off of my shoulder! I couldn't believe the nerve of him. He was a well dressed grown man. I was so hyped up from the race that I grabbed my purse and punched him in the face when he turned around. He was pretty surprised as was I at my response, it is a wonder he didn't sue me!
You just never know when someone is waiting for an opportunity of any kind.

With the ball dropping in NYC and other major cities later tonight, I wonder how many people are gonna wind up having something of theirs lifted. That's one reason why I never go out and celebrate New Year's, it's easier to stay home and watch on TV.

The important thing whether in Europe or U.S. is vigilance, especially in big cities and terminals. This means avoiding being alone on dark streets, e.g. When our daughter lived in NYC she advised to stay in crowds and on subways get on the car near a motorman.
Never been a pickpocket victim in America, only in Athens when my guard was down after relaxing in a small village. Assaults can and do happen, especially when we are tourists not being careful. Sometimes as Judy reported things can be really scarey! And I recall myself staying at Hotel Principado in Madrid near the guarded Cortez just to be on the safe side!
But basically living and traveling in the U.S. over my many years I've never felt in danger nor had any problems.
