Has anyone stayed on the island of Murano: near Venice

How easy/difficult was it to get to the main island of Venice from Murano? Is lodging on Murano worth the extra savings? Say $40/night?

nah, stay on Venice proper unless you can't find a room. you want to be able to roll out of bed and wander - not make it a daily production to get there and back.

I checked the internet for vaparetto routes and timetables and from Murano to Venice proper only takes 17 minutes and there is a vaparetto that leaves every 20 minutes. That doesn't seem like a daily production to me. Anyone else stay on Murano that has an opinion for me?

Dear Matt,
I had a house on Murano for 5 years (I now live in Venice) and there is only one hotel (tiny rooms, no breakfast) and a couple of pensione in Murano. A vaporetto leaves Murano for Venice every 10 minutes and it takes less than 10 minutes to get from the Colonna stop (Murano) to the Fondamenta Nuove stop in Venice. Depending upon what time of year you are here, I would recommend either one or the other. If coming in July or August, stay in Murano. It is cooler and you can't believe the amount of tourists here. Some days it's almost impossible to get through the streets. But in Murano there are no restaurants open for dinner so you have to come to Venice anyway!
Ciao.
Kris

Kris, do you know of Locanda Conterie? This is where I am thinking of staying. If you do, any opinion?

I am coming to Venice for a very short
stay, two nights, on my way to a sailing
trip from Croatia. Murano looks very interesting and I have an interest in glass and giftwares. Are there no restraunts in Murano??

The only thing that I can add is assumithe frequency of trips and the durations of the trip are accurate, I recall that we had to transfer vapporettos to get one to get us to San Marco. So that includes another wait and more time. So your 20-30 minute trip may be closer to an hour if you plan on going to san marco. If I was staying for one or two nights I don't think I'd want to do this trip back and forth once or twice a day. Forty bucks is a drop in the travel budget when factoring in a trip to Venice and I would be more interested in getting the location right. (imo)

There are a number of restaurants in Murano (like Antica Trattoria Muranese, Antica Trattoria Valmarana, Osteria Dalla Mora, Ai Frati, Busa alla Torre). A long time ago, in summer, I had lunch at "Ai Frati" and it appeared to be open for dinner. But Kris should know better
