Hotel in Venice - special reqs
Can anyone recommend a hotel for us? We are ending a 12 day Mediterranean cruise in Venice 08/03 which will dock at the Stazione Maritima. We will be in Venice one night on the ship and one night at a hotel. My husband is recovering from a stroke and although very mobile, he does not have feeling on his left side and doesn't have the best balance. We'd like to find a hotel in the $200-$300 range that is convenient, has pick-up service from the ship and drop-off service to the airport via private water taxi (if possible). Also convenient to vaperettas to favorite sites and not too stuffy. Wheh! Thank you for your input...

Pam,

You should be able to set up a water taxi from the pier to many hotels in Venice that have private docks. We have stayed in two recently.

The Hotel American in Dorsoduro, is a lovely three star hotel with a private boat dock. Our room was very nice and recently renovated, the bathroom was very modern with all amenities. We paid about $200/night for a canal view room. We stayed in the spring of 2001.

The vaporetto stop is about a five minute walk with one bridge to cross.

This past spring, we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in Venice at the Hotel Savoia y Jolanda on the Riva degli Schiavoni, just a short walk to Piazza San Marco. It is a four star hotel but we did not find it stuffy.

Our room was fabulous, the bathroom state of the art, but the view from our small balcony was what was worth every penny. The entire lagoon is right there, it makes me misty eyed even today when I remember it.

It may be a little out of your price range though. In August this year it was about $335 a night for a lagoon view double.

The vaporetto stop, San Zaccaria, is directly in front of the hotel which is very convenient for both water taxis and getting around Venice while you're there. Literally about 20-30 steps from the hotel lobby to the stop.

Have a great time! If I can answer any other specific questions, let me know.

Dianne

Pam- try the Cipriani-- It may be a little over your budget, but you don't need to go to the most exp.room..

They do have their own private vaporetto and I think you can arrange for them to pick you up at the Pier--

Also, you can try booking the Danieli- it is on the Grand Canal and you can flag a private vaporetto( they run like Taxis) and have them take you direct to the hotel==

Hardest part will be getting hubs in and out of vaporetto-- but I am sure those stronge Italian men will help you..

On the whole ,Venice is a real walking city-lots of small bridges to climb etc...

Would you be able to get a wheelchair so you could push him around-- either that ,or let him stay in St.Marks Sq with a nice cup of Espresso and a book....

I would consider Palazzo Sant Angelo. They have a private dock right in front of the hotel for water taxis and the vaporetto stops right in front as well. They also have big elevators. This is a new hotel, opened April 2002, but located in an old building, of course. Look at their website at www.santangelo.hotelinvenice.com. They are having some special introductory pricing and if you can get in on that it is really a good value. We stayed there Sept. 2002 for 3 nights and really enjoyed it. It is a 10-15 minute walk to St. Marks Square.

Pam
Look into the Saturnia Internazionale.
It has an outstanding location just a few minutes from Piazza San Marco, a private water entrance, an excellent breakfast (included) and all other services. My only criticism when I stayed there last year is that our room was rather dark, but perhaps you will do better on that feature. Our (twin) room was however very large.
Room rates will be on the high end of your range I think.
