Hotel or B & B in Edinburgh
My husband and I will be visiting Edinburgh in early August. Can you recommend a moderately priced place to stay. We won't have a car, so we would like to stay in an area where we can walk to major attractions or take public transportation.
Thanks

My wife and I stayed in a great B&B in Edinburgh for a week while we were visiting our daughter at the University. It was called Elmview and was centrally located near the University and within easy walking distance of everything in Edinburgh. I think we paid about $50 per night 3 years ago. Hope this helps. Bob

Since August is festival month, your choices at this point may be slim, however, I like to recommend the Dunedin Guest House. We've stayed there several times and become friends with the owners, who are wonderful. They have a beautiful listed historic home. All the guestrooms have en suite bathrooms and cooked-to-order breakfast is included.
They have 4 stars and are highly recommended by Rick Steves. However, because they're so popular they fill up quickly--particularly during August. Their Web site is www.dunedinguesthouse.co.uk
Have a great trip--Edinburgh is at the top of my list of favorite cities!

There are actually several posts on this forum re: Edinburgh B&B's...make sure to do a search. In any event, I'll reiterate my suggestion: 16 Lynedoch Place. I believe the website is www.16lynedochplace.co.uk. Its a 5 minute walk to Prince's street, lovely rooms, hostess, breakfast. Couldn't be better.

Great small hotel called Dunstane House on West Coates St. You can walk downtown or if you prefer there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel.

Stayed there last October. Very nice!

How long will you be in the city? August is a very special case when it comes to accomodations in Edinburgh. The various festivals and the Tattoo means almost every room in the area is filled.
Most places worth staying at have a 3 or 4 night minimum, many raise their rates - and many will already be fully booked.
So I would get on it RIGHT AWAY. The sorts of places most Fodorites mention (those above, Castle View, and others) are really good - but also really popular and some book up a year in advance for festival time.
It may be a point of taking what you can get. . . . . .

I recommend the Parliment House Hotel in Edinburgh. The site is: http://www.2stay.com/uk/hotels/parliament.html. Very Scottish motif to it and located at the bottom of Calton Hill and still with in decent walking distance of the other sites in the city. It is just off of Prince's St. - and near the train station.
