Hotels in Nafplio

Hi,
I've somewhat narrowed our hotel choice down to Byron Hotel (70 euros for a room with a view and a balcony) and Eleni Pension (for a room with a view but no balcony) for 3 nights in April of next year.
Any opinions or advice?
Thanks.

Did you check Hotel Leto next to Eleni Pension at same price for room with view AND balcony? Look at TA reviews, all favorable ... I always stay there... It looks DOWN on the roof of Byron ... much better view.

These are are all in the same area. It is quiet and good for sleeping. Free parking is less than 100 meters from Leto and Eleni.
Leto has the best view.
Eleni is beautifully appointed and certainly was cheaper than Byron and Leto a couple of years ago.

After viewing all three we chose Eleni

Leto in late May 2010 is 70 Euros per double with balcony, including breakfast ... in April it may be a tad lower. Compare with Eleni.

Hi,

We recently stayed at the Leto. I enjoyed the location. The rooms are fine and each has a small balcony. One night we (2 couples) came back with a bottle of wine and they gladly gave up wine glasses and opened the bottle and it was no problem sitting outside in the breakfast room. This was so nice as the room balconies are too small for 4 people, but fine for 2. Enjoy your trip. It is a wonderful area. Please go to Nemea which is on the way to Napflion coming from Athens. There are ruins there, but the best is it is wine country. There are 30 wineries and tasting is available. The wine was good.

Have a fabulous trip, Yipper

Just heard back from Leto. Rooms with view and balcony are 72 euros a night. That includes tax and breakfast.
Now I just have to make a decision!

Yipper,
We're thinking of traveling by bus to and from Nafplio.
Do you know if the wineries are accessible by bus?

I'm not familiar with the hotels mentioned, but they sound like a good deal. We spent 2 weeks with Nafplio as our home base and did day trips. We were in an apartment. You will love the town. It is absolutly delightful and charming.

Bettina, you could do bus to/from Nafplio and rent car only for a day for wineries, and a day for touring ruins. I have done this.... car about 35€ day for small one.

Travelerjan,
It looks like we would have to plan on a good 4 to 5 hours to get from the Athens airport to Nafplio.
You mention 1 bus to Kifissou Station (where is that) and a second to Nafplio.
Is that correct/
thanks for your help

Well Bettina, did you look at a Map? It's "over the river and through the woods" ... in other words, it's not next door to Athens. If you are willing & able to rent a car at the airport, you can drive there on a supermodern divided highway with no traffic lights, in about 2.5 hours. If you do not want to do that or are not able to, and there are 2 of you, you can spend almost as much money and take about 4-5 hours. I do that because I often travel alone, and I dont at this point have a driver's license.

Kissifou is the name of the Street by the intercity bus station (known as the KTEL bus system). What does it matter where it is? You take the X96 bus there. I know I have given complete instructions on this in a recent thread, and you must have read it because you refer to it. Do you have that thread, or you want me to repeat it?

Sorry about that Bettina --- something snapped; didn't get dinner yet. The bus is not X96, it is X 93. You get it outside the Arrival doors 4-5 of the Airport. You buy a ticket at a kiosk just by the door (unless the kiosk is not manned, and then y buy your ticket from the driver.. Be sure to "validate" your ticket by punching it in a pole-mounted box in the bus, or you are subject to a fine if inspectors come in. There is a central area inside the bus where everyone piles his/her luggage.

When you get to the Kissifou Bus station (which some people call Terminal A, but no Greek does), you go to the ARGOLID window (that's the name of the province that Nafplio is the biggest city of). Your ticket will cost 11.5 one way, and is an assigned seat. Ask for a seat on the LH side (if he does not understand you, use sign language, tap your left arm) ... that way you get a nice view of the sea for most of the way. The bus in the big terminal is at the far corner to your Left -- right by the exit. The bus goes hourly on the half hour until about 9:30 pm. Be sure to have some water, also its a good idea to have used the restrooms in the Airport terminal ... because none of us is crazy about a bus terminal restroom, and there is no restroom on bus; it does stop briefly at Corinth but very briefly.

You will go through some grotty industrial areas for awhile, but then there is the nice water. When you get near the Corinth area, keep a close watch for the Corinth canal because the highway goes right over it and if you blink you miss it -- very deep but VERY narrow!. Shortly afterwards, the bus turns off the big highway to a smaller road to the left going through orange groves and lemon groves etc. It goes right through the ancient town of Argos, almost brushing buildings on each side. Nafplio is he last stop. there is a taxi line-up across the street from the station. You may be taking a taxi to your hotel, but you probably will walk back to the station. You can buy your return ticket if you know when you are going back. I think it goes hourly ON the hour starting at about 6:15 am. then 8, then 9 etc.

DOes that answer all your questions?

Thank you very much Travelerjan!
By any chance, do you know how late the buses run going to Napflio?
As of now, we're planning 4 nights in Chania, 2 in Santorini, 4 in Nafplio, and the last night in Athens due to an early flight out in the am.

Hi Bettina,

I think travelerjan answered the question as to the wineries. I am not familiar with the bus system in Greece. We always rent a car. It would be ideal to rent a car for a day and go to the ruins and then the wineries. Ther are ruins in Nemea itself. You might want the car for 2 days. You can to to Epidavros and there is a charming sea side town called Palae Epidavros. I do not recall when you are going, but there is a sweet beach around the corner of Mike's hotel. There is a changing area and a shower, but no sun beds. The harbor is lovely and there are water taxis that go to the near by islands. There are several restaurants or a nice picnic can be had next to the harbor on the town green.

Have a fabulous trip, yipper
