How is Islington? (London)

How is Islington? I was thinking of staying there during an upcoming trip to London. I don't know anything about Islington.

A more helpful response might be to suggest that Fred looks at something like the Smooth Hound site
http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk/tourism/london/islington.html

Like most London district names, 'Islington' can have moveable boundaries dependin on who you're talking to. Around Upper Street it is posh yuppy/professional/media metropolitan, antique shops, smart cafés and restaurants and so on. There are some very expensive properties in the residential streets (the Blairs are said to be annoyed that they had to sell their house when they moved into Downing Street, because what they got £675,000 for in 1997 now fetches over £2 million). There's a rather more fun and run-of-the-mill street market by the Angel crossroads and tube station, and some areas of relative deprivation the nearer you get to Kings Cross one way and Hackney the other.

There are some hotels there, as there's a popular conference centre, and good transport links to other parts of London.

Thank you for your reply, Patrick. I looked up a few websites including an MP running under the Socialist Alliance. I didn't know if Islington was socialist paradise or anything weird. From your post, it's nothing weird.

You have probably already looked at this website, but in case not:
http://www.myislington.co.uk/
The movie About A Boy with Hugh Grant was set in Islington, and I think some scenes were filmed there.

While visiting Londong at few years ago, we stayed in a flat in Islington, just off Upper High Street. As we walked from the Angel tube stop along High Street to our flat, the neighborhood gradually improved. This is a well-to-do residential area, as the previous poster noted, with restaurants, pubs and theaters. We even had fun at the "jumble sale" at the local church on High Street!
