how is the Amalfi Coast in March?

I had been making tentative plans for a May/June trip to Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. The tanking value of the dollar is making me seriously consider moving the trip to much-cheaper mid-March.

If I choose to do this, I'd probably limit myself to the Amalfi Coast due to having a few less travel days and the probability for warmer weather in the south.

This is a 10th anniversary trip, so I really want it to be wonderful. Has anyone been to the AC region in March? What's it like?

Am I wise to bypass Tuscany, or could that be pleasant in March?

I was in Sorrento in late March a few years ago and it was COLD. Coats were necessary. Don't know if that was a fluke, but March is unpredictable everywhere.

I was in Sorrento the end of March several years ago and had warm sunny days(short sleeves) and cool nights(jackets). We also had good weather in Florence and Rome in late March. I would think March weather could be very unpredictable.

Take a look at weatherbase.com and worldclimate.com for historical temperatures and rainfall. March on the Amalfi coast is like March in New York City (which lie roughly on the same latitude): changeable. It can be cold, blustery and rainy or warm and sunny. It is really up to luck. Average high temperature is 60 F. You probably will not be able to spend any time by beach or pool as it will be too cool and the water will not be swimmable, and I don't believe there is anything regular sort of ferry to Capri in March, which is an indication that it is not a popular time to travel there.

Many of the better restaurants (and some hotels) close from November through March which is another indication of the weather, and which also means that you will miss out on some great dining opportunities. All in all, IMO, if this is supposed to be a special anniversiary trip, I would keep to your original dates rather than risk a cold rainy trip.

If you still want to go in March, I think Tuscany/Florenece (and/or Rome, Milan) would be a better choice. The weather will be the same but that is not quite such a factor as in a coastal town. The countryside of Tuscany may be a bit disappointing in March in a cold rain, and you may find restaurants closed there as well, so you would be better off sticking to the cities, as much of what there is to be seen is indoors, and rainy days walking around Rome and Florence can be very beautiful and romantic. Also, there are few crowds so you can spend more time in the museums and sites.

I was in Florence/Tuscany last year in early March. Weather was in the upper 50's/low 60's; mostly sunny; we visited many hill towns, none of which were crowded, and had a wonderful time; If I were you, I would skip the Amalfi coast in March

As people have stated, March is unpredictable. I was in Amalfi last March and the weather was beautiful. Warm and sunny during the day. Was able to wear a bathing suit (and I get cold easily!). The evenings were chilly. However, I also went back this last September right after the heatwave, and the evenings were chilly. You just never know. Much less crowds in March, and much easier/cheaper to find accommodations. I wouldn't hesitate going in March.
