How many days would be enough for Dubrovnik?

Say I have a short holiday, but really would love to visit Dubrovnik, Croatia, how many days do you think I need to really enjoy the sights of Dubrovnik? 2 days? 3?

We found 2 was plenty, but if you're only going to Dubrovnik -and nowhere else in Croatia- I would say 3!

Arrive and get settled, day 1

Two full days for the town, assuming that you enjoy sitting in a cafe having a coffee or glass of wine as much as seeing official sites. The walls are worth the walk as are the medieval pharmacy and gardens, the war museum, and the treasury.

Another day for an expedition to Cavtat or an island.

Another day for an expedition to Kotor in Montenegro.

Day 6, go to the airport and fly home.

We loved Dubrovnik. It's small, but charming and very atmospheric. We stayed for 2 full days (and another for Montenegro) and honestly felt that another day or two would have been nice. I'm not usually as slow of a traveler as others on this board, but Dubrovnik is one of the few places where I could have stayed longer even though I'd seen most of the sights.

So to answer your question, you could enjoy Dubrovnik in 2 days but if you have time for an extra day or two, go for it.

I`m with ackislander on this one. It would be a shame not to see some of the area around Dubrovnik. The places he has listed are all great.

Also agree with the above. Our daytrip to Montenegro was a highlight of our trip. I can't recommend it enough. With just 2 days/nights in Dubrovnik you will miss out on Montenegro or other daytrip options around Dubrovnik, which would be a shame.

Thanks guys! This is the first time I have heard about Kotor though. I have not, after all, researched on Montenegro at all. What are the attractions there and how do I get there (buses/taxis, prices, time)?

We used a private guide for Montenegro because Atlas failed to show up regardless of the fact that we had reservations and prepaid (in their defense, they didn't have enough attendees, but it would have been nice to have been notified) and had a wonderful experience. Kotor and the Montenegro coast is absolutely gorgeous. Many use Atlas without any problems at all, but a private tour or renting a car and doing it yourself are other options.

If you are interested, I have pics of my trip including Montenegro. You may be able to get a feel for if your interested or not by seeing them; I became interested by seeing someone else's pictures. They can be found at www.kodakgallery.com/tracybates. Just pan down until you get to the respective photo album.

Driving yourself is very easy. There is only one road to MOntenegro--Stay onthat road and you arrive in Kotor--continue onthat road and you will arrive in Budva. Budva was the little resort town that we found delightful. on the way back we took the ferry across the Bay of Kotor and cut out about an hour of driving around the Bay. An easy day trip without being hearded around by a tour bus.

I drove up to Dubrovnik after a few days in Montenegro on a business trip. Kotor is definitely worth it, and driving yourself is preferable. There are lots of spots around the Bay of Kotor where you'll want to pull off the road, gaze at the beauty of your surroundings, and take a few pictures. The little town of Perast, a ways north of Kotor, is a perfect example.

As for Dubrovnik, I arrived in the late afternoon, spent two nights, and left around noon to get back to Montenegro (by way of Bosnia). I would have enjoyed adding one more day to my stay there.

I am a Dubrovnik fan. I have been there 4 times the past 4 years. I don't stay in the city anymore, so I guess probably 3 days is good for people without an addiction.

I recomend you stay clear of the hotelarea in the new town. Try to get a hotel at the old town side, or in Cavtat (loooovly).

Bring bathing-shoes for your swim, as it is not sandy beaches.

And: enjoy!
