How often/how far in advance do you reconfirm your hotel/apart reservations

Being the worrying type I have to refrain from trying to reconfirm reservations too often. I made most of our reservations for the hotels and apartments back in August to October of 2010. We are now 10 week out from our trip and I thought now would be a good time to check in with them all. Once I do that I'll have to refrain from pestering them again 1 week out from our departure.

I even called the night before AND the morning of our last London trip ( reminding them we had a very very late arrival) and our room was still given away for the first night.

I have never reconfirmed either (and I have been traveling for about 25 years to Europe), and never had a problem. The only hotel reservations I "reconfirm" are ones made through a booking or third-party website, not with the hotel directly, and then I do that within a few days of making the reservation. I don't understand why the need to reconfirm so much, you have a confirmation, assuming it's in writing (I always get it in writing by email), why don't you think you have one. I'm actually kind of an overly-cautious worrier, in fact, but have never done this.

With an apt., I presume you have a contract and have already paid all or much of it, so I really don't see the need to re-confirm that.

I have only had a problem once with a Parisian hotel that didn't have a room for me when I got there, but it had nothing to do with them not having my reservation. They overbooked. They knew they had a reservation for me and when I got there, they had arranged to "walk" me to a comparable hotel at the same rate a block away, where they made me a reservation. That was okay with me, it was only one night, I didn't care that much. I think sometimes hotels overbook and sometimes people don't leave when they said they would, but it's not because they don't have your reservation, so not sure what reconfirming in advance would do.

I only reconfirm a week before I go. I figure if something has happened, I'd rather have 7 days to scramble to find something else.

I usually reconfirm about a week before we leave the US.

On our trip last year, I had to reschedule about 8 weeks before our departure due to my husband's illness. All of our hotels sent confirmation on the date changes so I figured I didn't need to reconfirm before we left home. I should have.

When we reached Berchtesgaden, our hotel had no record of our reservation but since they had rooms, I didn't think anything of it. However, once I returned home, I realized that they had charged us 250E as "no shows" the day after we originally were due to stay there. So, we essentially paid twice! When contacted, the owner said he would fix it, but then said he was unable to give us a credit and wanted to do a bank transfer. I finally just notified our credit card company and they handled it. Had I reconfirmed, this probably could have been avoided.
