When we fly from Chicago to Italy, if we don't go on Alitalia, we usually go on Lufthansa. They have good connections from Frankfurt and Munich to many Italian cities, especially Venice.

I think that only Lufthansa, Air France, and Alitalia would let you fly back from Bari or Naples with a single connection and no airport change. You could do BA, but the flight to/from Naples leaves from Gatwick. Finally, I would assume that some sort of combination between Air Canada and Lufthansa would be easy enough to find.

Assuming you are flying Coach, I would probably take Air France, because:

1) An A330/340 beats the 777 that Air Canada flies, due to the 2-4-2 layout.

2) Lufthansa does not have in-seat video in coach.

3) Alitalia is not reliable enough for my tastes, with all the uncertainty surrounding them. And the long-haul experience is pretty bad.

If you are flying in business, I would take Air Canada and connect to Lufthansa.

Air Canada flies to Rome - from there

you can take Alitalia.Or a train to
Naples (?)

Or fly to Venice with Air Canada ( and Lufthansa) via Frankfurt.

I used to fly from Toronto to London Heathrow (before through Heathrow became too much bother), then change to BMI (www.flybmi.com, different termianl) to other part of Italy, such as Venice, Milan, or Naples. As quite often seat sales available between Toronto and London by Air Canada, BME is part of Star Alliance, usually offer good fares.

I just bought tickets issued by Air Canada from Toronto through Zurich to Milan, if flying through Frankfurt, the flight will be coshared with Lufthansa, fly by airone ( www.flyairone.it, convenient for flights in/out/between cities of Italy)
