If you only had one night to dine in Venice.......where would you suggest?

DH and I will be in Venice overnight on a cruise and have never been to Venice. We have decided to eat in Venice rather than on the ship (smart!!! I think), and are looking for that one restaurant that will leave an indelible impression. We consider ourselves adventurous, not afraid to travel to get somewhere, and somewhat 'foodies'. We enjoy great wine, great food, and a relaxing professional atmosphere, all at a fair cost (Ie. don't like mediocre food at expensive prices - who does?). Osteria Del Fiore is being considered, but looking for something maybe a little less expensive than that. Not interested in Cipriani for dinner, may go for a drink. What would you suggest?

Da Raffaele---al fresco on a side canal about 7 minutes north of San Marco and near a gondola station.

Well regardless of where you go for dinner, I trust you will end up in St. Mark's Square having a drink or coffee under the stars listening to the "battle" of the orchestras.

A second to Neopolitan's suggestion of the "battle". It's expensive... but on the right nite it's magical.
We took fellow cruisers (who'd never been to Venice) to Corte Sconta..and they loved it. But it's primarily fish and a little hard to find; you might want to stay closer to San Marco.

Alle Testiere in the Castello area. Reserve in advance as locals flock to this restaurant.

Quite simply - superb.

Did you already go?

Osteria San Marco was my best meal in Venice.

I double the vote for Corte Sconta ... one of the most memorable meals I've eaten (their house-sampler of appetizers was fantastic) and I will go way out of my way for stellar gastronomic experiences. All restuarants in Venice are expensive, so it might as well be worth the price. Do make sure to reserve in advance.

Trattoria Corte Sconta
Venezia Castello
Calle Del Pestrin No. 3886

Hi all, we ended up at the Osteria di Santa Marina on the recommendation of a good friend.. The seafood was so fresh, I swear it was still moving on my plate. It was terrific. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine ran us about $140 www.osteriadisantamarina.it

Stay away from San Marco area...
Great dining at La Piscina on the Giudeca canal or either Da Alberto or Fiaschetta Toscana in Cannaregio

Since I stay in Cannaregio, I always have to give props to the ristorante/osteria there-Fiaschetteria Toscana is written up in every foodie article about Venice-in T & L, Nat'l Geographic, to name two, as is Alle Testiere. Da Alberto's is a great osteria just by the lovely Chiesa dei Miracoli-another very good choice.

But I guess if I were to pick two it would be 1. Alle Testiere and 2. Fiaschetteria Toscana-although there are many many others that I love that are not so expensive, and just as good-these are two that are internationally recognized as very good.

You can read personal reviews of most of these restaurants here on the Fodor's destination guide-under Venice restaurants.

da Remigio in Castello is an excellent seafood restaurant. We've always had very professional service...and it seems to be frequently mostly by Venetians, at least on the nights we've been there. Reservations essential.

I can't wait until September 23rd to have their gnocchi alla pescatora melting in my mouth.

GattoBaci, Our trip to Italy will be winding down on the 23rd-We have to leave Venice at 6:30am on the 25th! Perhaps we will see you at da Remigio. For me gnocchi anything sounds good. We are now 41 days and counting! Shirley
