I'm taking a solo vacation from NY to Milan and back to NY.

I would like hotels recommendation in Milan and Barcelona. I have seven nights to spend both cities. Any suggestions are welcome.

Both cities have hundreds (and hundreds) -- what is your Budget? And what sort of property appeals to you?

Welcome to Fodor's Europe forum! Lots of people here who can help you. But you'll need to give more information to get appropriate suggestions

I stayed at the Hotel Milano Scala in July and was pleased with the location and the hotel. Rooms are on the dark side, though, if that's a problem for you. My room faced the street, but still wasn't "bright." I would stay there again.

Hotel Milano Scala 4 Stelle Superior Centro Milano Boutique Hotel

Oops, I see you say you want a 3-star. Maybe it would be more helpful if you mentioned the maximum price per room per night that you'd want to pay.

Thank you, I decided that I will spend 5 nights in Barcelona and 2 nights Milan. I'm looking a few hotels in Barcelona and I'll keep the Milano Scala as an option.

Not sure how many stars it has, but we like Antica Locanda Leonardo near The Last Supper. Walkable to Duomo area or take a tram there. Neighborhood restaurants nearby.

Number of stars for hotels in Italy and Spain have to do with amenities, not quality, so a small, very nice hotel might not get as many stars as a poor quality one with an elevator.

Stars in all countries I've ever been to DO provide a measure of standard that is very useful. If you go to a country alot, you kind of learn some things (like in Mexico, a 3* may not be that great), but this idea that you are going to find "very nice" hotels totally unrelated to the star level is something I dispute, and I've been to Barcelona several times. Besides, amenities DOES have alot to do with how "nice" a hotel is or "quality" when you are talking basic things like elevators, whether phones or English speaking desk personnel are available, etc (all of which I know affect star ratings in France where people will make that same statement) to many people.

a 3-star hotel means they want a midlevel, midrange hotel, which is more useful than stating actual dollar amts if that's the standard you want and you aren't familiar with prices in a certain city.

You are wrong.

Three star has ONLY to do with a specific list of amenities. Elevator, breakfast room, etc etc. It has absolutely nothing to do with whether the lift holds one person or eight, or is prone to break down. It has nothing to do with whether the Breakfast room is clean or there are mice in the muesli.

There are WONDERFUL 2 star places and AWFUL 4 star places and vice versa. To help the OP we need a budget - an actual $/€ number.

You need to be very precise with your dates. Milan is a very important city for trade fairs, fashions shows etc so prices during those weeks can be significantly higher.
