Ireland--Dingle & Doolin lodging--have you stayed here?
Hi---we've finally finalized our plans...now we need places to sleep. I am not one for driving until seeing something I like; I'm far too....well, you know. And it's our honeymoon--the less stress at this point, the better.

Here are options for our first night in Doolin: The Aran View House or the Sea View House. What do you think? Comments, good & bad? Any other suggestions?

Nights 4 & 5 on the Dingle Peninsula: Heaton's Guest House, Greenmount House, or the Mount Eagle Lodge? I found out about the first 2 from this message board---and then fell in love with Mount Eagle Lodge on the net--has anyone stayed there?

Thank you!!!!!!!!

Stephanie

We stayed at Mount Eagle's Lodge in August. It is a great place....quiet, close to a lot of different things to do (make sure you do the Slea Head Drive and make all the stops along the way), and the breakfasts are wonderful, especially the potato waffles. I haven't stayed at the other two places, but we would definately go back to the Mount Eagle Lodge.

Lorene

Hi Stephanie,
I stayed at Greenmount House last March. It's a great location -- a couple of blocks from town, a pasture next door and across the street, and a beautiful view of the harbor. The place is fairly large and rambling but new and neat as a pin. If you decide to stay there, ask for a room in the front -- they have bay windows with a view and are much sunnier than the ones in the back of the house. And the breakfasts are wonderful too!
You'll love Dingle, no matter where you choose to stay.

We stayed at Aran View House in Doolin. It was great. Originally I was a little concerned because it looked like it was way out, and I normally like to stay close in to "the action" such as that is in Doolin. But although it sits in a sort of field at the top of a smallish hill, it is just a very short stroll down into town -- we left the car.
Our room was a rather new one at that time (1998) in what are the converted stables. It was a beautifully furnished room. The staff was wonderful, and the Guinness in the bar was perfect. We ate dinner in the dining room one night while the sun set over the water and the islands -- a great view, but the meal was just so-so. Enjoyed our other meals in "town" more, especially the little cottage place called Brauch d'Haille (spelling?) followed by hitting a few pubs, McCann's and McDermot's for drinks and traditional music.

Hi Stephanie and Sherry: I posted a review on some B&B's awhile back. It includes Cullinan's and Greenmount House if you are interested.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...earchText=Mina

Stephanie, we stayed at the Aran View House in the fall of 2000 and loved it. It is relatively close to Doolin, with its wonderful pubs filled with irish music. One of my favorite towns on our trip. The folks at Aran View were so nice that they found out that we were leaving for Shannnon before the breakfast was served on our last am and they gave us food for the road out of the kitchen! Enjoy.

No problem Sherry.

I wanted to add more one thing about Cullinan's. The views are not as good as some other B&B's mentioned, in case you are after ambience. Just a cute house on the main road. But I would not have stayed anywhere else...it was my second favorite after Greenmount House. Probably because the bed was so comfy and their pancakes cured one mean hangover!

In Dingle,we stayed at Heaton's for two nights in November. Room 8 is wonderful (large, well furnished, great view, big balcony) but the real attraction is Cameron and Nuala Heaton, their genuine warmth, and the breakfasts they serve (try the porridge!). The place is a perfect little walk of about 10 minutes to centre-Dingle (or three hours if you venture into one of the several pubs along the way).

In Doolin, we stayed at Cullinan's (great) and ate at the Doolin Cafe (superb). Rumour has it that the little restaurant operated seasonally (not in November anyway) at Cullinan's is very good as well. You'll be well-served at any of the above.

DES

The Sea View house is supposed to be very nice, but books up fast. I've never gotten in and already tried to book them for two days in May, and they were filled. Depends on when you are there, but book early.

Another option on Dingle if you want to get away from it all is "The Shores" on the north side of the peninsula. It's beautiful, but more remote. The views are wonderful.

Bill

We stayed at Mt. Eagle Lodge, and loved it. We had a sea view room, and when our host, Eric, discovered we like to hike he'd present us with a map each morning of where we should hike that day! Each and every hike was fantastic! For breakfast, try the scrambled eggs & smoked salmon - yummmmmm! While in Dingle don't miss Dingle Crystal, run by Sean Daly. He trained at Waterford, and now does his own. His website is
http://www.dinglecrystal.ie/productsite/enter.html

In Doolin we stayed at O'Connors Farmhouse B&B. It was new, and very clean & nice, but had the only cold host we'd met. All others were super friendly, and open!
Stephanie,

I'm afraid I have to lodge what appears to be a minority view as regards the Aran View. While I enjoyed the location - a short walk to Doolin's pubs, its terrific up-market crafts gallery, and as a gateway to the wonderful Burren - the accomodation doesn't offer good value. I was there a couple years ago, and my room was clean, but impersonal, lacking in any kind of style. Moreover, the Aran View's breakfast was forgettable. This was all the more disappointing, given the fact I had stayed there about ten years ago, and remember it as being more distinctive.

On a more positive note, Dingle's Greenmount House is a delight. Unlike the Aran View, it features attractive lodging, super breakfasts, and an overall more distinctive, more personal style. Greenmount is a solid value.

Best of luck.
