is it possible to do a day trip from rome to positano?

Yes, you can, although it's a long day: take a Eurostar train from Rome to Naples Centrale, a taxi to Molo Beverello, a hydrofoil to Positano. Same itinerary on the return. You need to have the timetables of both the trains and the hydrofoils to make this work. Train schedule and fares at www.trenitalia.com

Friends of did this by chartering a limo for the day. Divided by 4 it was not unreasonable and really makes the day a lot more do-able. GAC is correct about the connections. It would make it tough. My friends also got to pop into Pompeii for a bit and their driver took them to a special restaurant with a kitchen tour.

Is it possible? Sure, but it would be a very long day. The best way to do it would be to hire a driver for the day to pick you up in Rome, drive you to Positano and then take you back to Rome. This of course would cost a great deal, but it would save you a lot of time and trouble. If you don't do that, you need to take the first Eurostar train to Naples and then either: 1. Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and then bus, cab or hydrofoil to Positano; 2. Walk or cab to hydrofoil dock in Naples and take hydrofoil to Positano; or 3. Take a bus or cab from the Naples train station to Positano. Repeat in the evening to catch train back to Rome.

travelmom: Be careful trying to arrange taking the train and meeting the hydrofoil. We took the train from Venice last summer to Naples to take the hydrofoil to Positano. Based on a schedule we had, we thought we could take several different hydrofoils. As it turned it, we just made it to the only one of the day. Then there is the worry of when the hydrofoil can be caught back to Naples to make the train. A car and driver would be worth the money just to not have the stress of making connections on time.

We used a fabulous driver by the name of Paolo De Santis. I thought his price was very reasonable. You can email him [email protected] or he has a website www.vallonicarservice.it. He spoke english very well, was knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor. Good luck.

I don't mean to toss cold water on your plans, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind if you're contemplating a day trip from Rome to Positano.
If you train from Rome to Naples, your train may be late leaving Rome. Although most trains depart on time, our train to Naples last October was more than one hour late leaving Rome.
You don't mention what time of year your trip is, but if the weather is poor with wind and choppy seas, the ferry from Naples to Positano won't be running.
If you use a driver from Naples or Rome to Positano, depending on the time of year there could be extremely heavy traffic. What looks like a short distance by road can end up taking a long time. And you get to do it twice!
All of this effort for a few hours in Positano? I'd save Positano for another trip and include Capri or Ischia and Pompei or Paestum.

Having been there several times, there is no way I would do a day trip! All you are going to be doing is traveling all day long! I seem to recall that Paestum is several hours drive South of Positano, definitely too far. I think Jean meant Herculaneum (sp).

No, I did mean Paestum. I suggested Travelmom go to Positano on another trip to Italy. From there she could visit Paestum or Pompei one day and spend a day or two on Capri or Ischia. Making Positano a destination and not just a day trip opens up many other places to visit.

Jean or whoever knows. I have reservations for Capri and plan to take the hydrofoil from Naples. This will be mid-October. Am I likely to be stranded? And what happens to reservations when there is no way to get there?

Axelrod: I can't answer your question about what will happen to your reservation on the ferry, but you won't be stranded. You can take the CV (Circumvesuviana) commuter train to Sorrento and there take a bus to Positano. If your budget permits, you could hire a cab.

I should clarify my question. My hotel reservations are on Capri. Does it happen that folks cannot get to Capri and the hotel there? And if that happens, are the hotels on Capri understanding or do they charge you?
