Is it safe for a single woman to travel alone in Rome?

I am thinking of going to Rome between Christmas and New Year's day this year. Is it safe for me to travel alone without getting too much harrassment from men? I was in London recently and even though someone tried to pick me up almost everyday, they weren't all that agressive or annoying. Thanks.

You might want to scan back, I mean to July maybe even June, this subject came up and got a lot of responses. Then try www.eurotrip.com --more of a singles forum w/l5 travelboards. Its fun- I go back and forth between both-this one is intellectuals and than one is fun- go into the "packing" travel board, back to May/June archives and read the tirade between several people over one night stands and going to Europe looking for an easy hit. One guy says American women are easiest and all hell broke loose. Its hysterical!

Italian men pride themselves on being the best lovers in the world (and they ARE BTW)so do expect to be hit on, and often. However, they are very respectful of your wishes, and won't pursue unless
invited to. Dress matronly with low heels and you won't have any problem. But what you will miss!

Not only is it safe, but it is fun too! I was there in 1995 for the first time with a girlfriend, fell in love with the place and have since returned twice on my own as parts of other trips. I am in my late 20's and look very young and have no disaster stories to report. As everyone always says, just be smart and careful about things. Sure guys may try to pick you up but it isn't always sleazy, it's just a very un-American way of doing things. Be wary, but also be open-minded because you may meet some of the kindest, friendliest, most interesting people that you would not meet elsewhere. You will have the best time traveling in Italy on your own. I certainly did. Feel free to write me directly.

I think you'll do fine. You'll meet some very interesting people. Don't misinterpret friendly talk as a "pickup-try to get you into bed" I found the Italian men very charming. They will be respectful of your wishes. Have fun.
