Is Northern Italy too cold in May?

I am thinking of going to Lake Como and other places in the region mid May (~10th-25th) for my honeymoon.

But the internet says the average Hi/Lo in Como during that time is 55/42 farenheit!!

that sounds too cold! but then every website/guidebook I've read says May/June is the best time to go. doesn't add up to me ... is it warmer around the lakes? i've heard a bit about 'micro-climates' around the lake.

The first time we wnet to Lake Como (Menaggio) it was in mid-May and the weather was wonderful, Warm enough for short sleeves although a bit cooler when crossing the lake on the ferries.

I think it is a perfect time to go.

That sounds low to me. We have done both April and May in the Lakes and May should be moderate--sweater weather.

I was there in April. It was probably in the 50's or 60's during the day--and sunny. So I don't think you'll have a problem.

We were there in May 1999 and it felt like a heat wave. Really wished I had brought more lightweight clothes.

The temps on the web are correct, it is on the cooler side in mid-May; it is a good time of year to visit because the gardens are in bloom and it is not as hot as it can get in later months. As you can see from a map The lakes are quite far north (about the same latitude as Boston), and the season does not really begin until April (many hotels do not open until March or even April).

Just bring layers and you will be fine; you can of course get a heat wave (as bettyk experience) or you can experience the average temps. Don't expect to be laying by a pool. In the sun out of the wind it can be very pleasant.
