It depends on what you want to see and experience! I'm very glad I spent 2 nights in Bled. That gave me one day to see the castle, walk Vintgar Gorge, take a pletna to the island, and walk around the lake - making for a very full day. I think it would be hard to do all those things on a single day trip from Ljubljana.

I agree with kja. Lake Bled isn't a place you 'see' but rather a place you 'do.' And a good part of that is having the time to enjoy a leisurely walk around the lake, stopping in somewhere for lunch, climbing to the castle, visiting the island, etc.
I suppose you could do it as a day trip but I think you would get much more of the sense of wonder it inspires by spending at least one night and rising early to experience morning light on the lake. Here's an image, if you're interested: http://jmstudio.fotopic.net/p61923420.html
If I could choose just one, I would choose Lake Bled over Plitvice lakes. The lakes are very beautiful, indeed, but not quite as memorable as Bled. Of course, it depends on the weather. If it's cool and rainy, do the lakes. If the weather is fine and the skies are blue, Bled can't be beat for its beauty.
Here are some images from Plitvice, if you're interested:

we spent some time in Ljubljana and did the day trip which was lovely. If you do a day trip on a coach you only get to have row out to the island and then coffee and cake at a lakeside cafe. But we also went to a nearby ski area the same day and saw another side of the lake. It depends on what else you want to do.

Thank you so much. We've decided to spend at least one night at Lake Bled.
One more question. We're thinking about going to Piran. Would that be a day trip from Ljubljana, or would you recommend a night's stay there as well?
