London in July - What to Wear?

London in July - What to Wear?
Or "What Not to Wear" as Trinny and Susannah of the BBC show would say.
I'm spending a week in So. Spain towards the end of July and will have about 3 days each, pre- and post-Spain, in London. I want to pack very light (due to Ryanair restrictions). For Spain, I know it will be HOT, which is easy to pack light for.
However, for London, I'm not so sure. Last August I travelled to Germany and most surrounding countries to the South and West. I heard mid 70's to low 80's (Farenheit) & so packed light weight short sleeved shirts, knee length skirts, & capris w/one fleece jacket. I was freezing for most of my trip (exept one day So. of the Alps in Italy) & don't want to make the same mistake. I ended up having to buy 2 pair of jeans & another light weight jacket to keep warm.

Unpredictable. That's the weather in London.
If I knew that it was going to be a scorcher of a summer I'd not try and find the sun abroad. It could be in the 80's or it could be in the low 60's.
However, of all the places in mainland UK, the South East and London has the most consistent weather (and even that isn't terribly consistent!). In reality, it's a case of whether you'll need an umbrella or not as even if it rains it won't be artic conditions. When it's colder you may be uncomfortable in a T-shirt and that's really as bad as it gets.

So if we bring a couple pair of long pants, an umbrella, t-shirts and a sweatshirt (that could tie around our waist if we get warm), be good for July?
Are jeans, t-shirt and cross trainers acceptable if we wanted to try an afternoon tea or would I plan on a skirt with sandals on that day?

Check out the weather before you leave and see what you think. We could be having a heatwave or we could be having a wet summer, who knows.
You'll probably need a light jacket for evenings in any case.
Afternoon tea; depends where you go. some places don't care, some places ask for 'smart' and a few have a dress code.
