I would agree with flanner that in the UK travel is accessible to all...after all,they were the pioneers of the package tours to the continent, and the Brits I have seen from Mallorca to Benidorm do indicate that all strata have travel within their means...
But to call England a classless society in my view is either utopian or naive...I have never been to a place where the way you speak (accent and diction and word choice) and the references to the invisible pecking order are more important.
That said, in London on a budget, one should also not forget about the lovely take-away food available. Don't mean just Pizza or curries. I am particularly fond of the higher end middle-east restaurants where you can make up your own buffet of mezze and pitas for a delicious treat at the hotel at a reasonable price. Even Fahkreldine (upscale in Picadilly and also Bayswater) will prepare you a nice meal which you can supplement with some lager or soft drink from Tesco's and voila...a quality meal at a reasonable price in an expensive city.
