Malpensa to Genoa by bus

We're planning a 3 day trip to Cinque Terre the end of March. Should we fly into Malpensa and take a bus to Genoa - or - should we fly to Nice and take the train to Santa Marguerita Ligure? HAS ANYONE TAKEN THIS BUS TO GENOA? HOW LONG IS THE RIDE?
We planned to make SML our base. We're looking forward to good walks and great food. Any travel and room suggestions are appreciated.
Why bother with the bus? The train is much better and faster.. take the bus from malpensa to milan train station.. the train leaves every hour and in 2:54 you will arrive in genoa..

The bus from Malpensa to Milan train station takes 1 hour ( I have done this before). Add waiting time for the bus and the train will make this 2:54 train trip about 5 hours. There is a direct bus from Malpensa to Genoa and I wondered if it is a better choice. Need to know how long a bus ride before I make a decision.

Hello Danielle,

I'm guessing here as I've never taken it, but as no-one else has answered: I think the Malpensa-Genoa bus would almost certainly be quicker.

Steve

Schedule and Fare information on the Malpensa to Genoa airporter bus can be found on the Malpensa Airport website.

If your plane arrives in Malpensa around 9 a.m., your best bet is the following:

1. Airporter bus direct to Milan Central Train Station (1 hr., 4.50 Euros); connect to

2. Intercity (IC) train direct to Santa Margherita Ligure, departing 12:10 and arriving 14:12 (14.31 Euros in 2nd class; 19.88 Euros in 1st class). NO TRAIN CHANGE IN GENOA.

If your plane arrives closer to 10 a.m., you could consider taking the airporter bus direct to Genoa, operated by VOLPI Lines. Leaves Malpensa at 11:30 (3 hrs., 15.50 Euros). At Genoa Porta Principe Station, you would take the first train going to SML.

I have been through the Genoa train station twice. There are lots of steps to and from the train platforms, so travel light.

Which train station: Porta Principe or Brignole? They are both large stations.
