My new itinerary with UH and 3 and half year old

Hello everyone

Can't help myself, had to let you know what I have worked out so far. Posted on slow travel, but, you have been so helpful to me had to keep you up to date:

Have uninterested husband and 3 and half year old to take into account.
( Just to let you know that My UH has started telling everyone we are going, even suggested we can leave earlier if I wanted and even started organising his farm and house sitting already!!)

So far:
Have realized that for us, we should fly into and out of Rome (awful wait times for 3 flights to Venice from Western Australia, easier to fly into Rome, also when visiting Italian relatives must bring presents from australia, flying on to Canada- without boring you- better for us to fly into and out of Rome)

Rome fly in 16th May. 6 nights
stay hotel/apartment in Rome closer to San Giovanni area as Uncle lives closer to that vicinity. not planning to see much in rome:
top priorities: Sistine chapel
Ostia Antica
colosseum
tivoli
Possible trip to Termoli for weekend with family to see where parents come from.

Train to Venice 22nd May 6 nights in apartment in Castello east-closer to Public garden

Sunday 28th May Pick up hire car from Piazzale Roma and drive to Pienza.

Stay at Agriturismo in Pienza 12 nights.

Drop car 9th June in Chiusi or Orvieto
Train to Rome

Rome: 4 nights at apartment or hotel
See family, visit any of top priorites.

Fly out 13th June

28 nights

I am fixated with avoiding Venice to Pienza drive. My UH would prefer to drive, but, I am not looking forward to it.

Also would like to stay in Orvieto and pick up hire car there, but means leaving Venice on the Friday to pick up car sat am instead, but, less changes the better for us. I could do it as a day trip, but, not sure if would see much to do it justice.

Sorry to Huitres, would have really loved to stay in Lucca, but, too many accomm. changes for us now. next time I hope.

any comments, info would be wonderful.

Hi G,

Looks nice.

The drive from Venice to Pienza is not as bad as you fear. Just stay in the right lane and do the speed limit.

A small compass is very helpful.

Look at the route at www.viamichelin.com.

Click "avoiding tolls".

It takes you along the coast through Ravenna.

Have a great visit.

Hi ginder:
Sorry to hear that you have a UH - they can certainly make traveling with a young child more tedious and taxing. (Nothing could be worse than one UH and an unhappy child in the car, both crabby). I had an UH but divorced him (for far worse marital reasons) and am happy to say that I enjoy traveling solo with my little bambina!

When looking over your itinerary, I would definitely try to take trains everywhere that you are going. You can easily do a day-trip from Roma to Orvieto (it's a 1 hour train). Also, do you need to rent a car from Venezia to Pienza? Cars may seem to be easier, but truthfully, train travel in Italy is quite smooth and direct. Then you won't have to deal with unfamiliar roads, highways, and an UH on top of that! I am all for peace and harmony on stressful trips and you want to have a nice time. Or alternatively, is there not a bus from Venice to Pienza that you could take? You could leave the driving up to someone else. Just my thoughts....

Too bad about Lucca, but there will always be a second time - your next trip to Italy!

Hi Huitres
Sorry to hear about your experience. My UH is starting to show slightly more experience, but,He's a doer in life, very little planning in execution of plans. I am the other way. Too much planning, not enough doing.
I am disappointed about Lucca. Hopefully next time.
With regard to trains, and going from Venice to Pienza, our vacation rental in Tuscany is sunday start, so I have tried other ways, that just mean more accommodation changes. The less the better for us. Also UH may be better driving than sitting in a train for over 4 hours. I think if it was just me and my bambina I would stick to trains, but, with UH driving in the countryside might keep him busy otherwise he might just stay in the apartment all the time. That's his idea of a holiday, since he's always working.
So a mix of both driving and train travel hopefully will be better. The drive from Venice to Pienza is a long one, but, fits well with allowing a full weekend with family in Rome before we go to Venice by train and staying 6 nights. Less moving around.
Thanks for your info. about Lucca. I really appreciated your help. I will probably still be planning to fit it in somehow knowing me.

Hi ginder: Good luck to you! Your trip does sound well planned out and with the driving segment in there, that should please your UH. (Frankly, your UH sounds like a lot of husbands, my ex as well, so consider him the norm). From what you've indicated, by the time you leave, he will probably be as excited as you are about this trip, so that's a good thing. Consider this the first of many trips, I am sure you will see lots of places that you may not have time to stop and see, so that way you can return again on another trip. (I am trying to get back to Italy in the late spring to visit friends in Siena and see "Il Palio" which I have never seen!) Buon viaggio!
