Opinions needed/stick w/Positano or change/son will be in Amalfi?

I need some help with this. Here's how it stands for now. Planning 4 nights in Positano after flying into Naples (day trips to Pompeii & Ravello/Amalfi combined & 1 day do as we please) and 1 night in Capri before taking train to Tuscany.

It turns out my son will be in Amalfi for a wedding, arriving towards the end of our visit to the coast...so nice of his friends to get married at the same time and in the same place we're visiting! I'm reluctantly rethinking Positano (really wanted to have my breakfast on the balcony and sip limoncello at night while soaking up the view)...sights/steps??...would we be better off staying in Amalfi? Easier to get together with my son (reassuring him we won't
monopolize his time ) and more importantly...more to see, especially when we arrive on the 1st day and just want to get out and about for a little. Does Amalfi have more in that respect? Not sure about the steps in Positano in the heat of June.

Should we stay in Amalfi, how long does it take to get to Pompeii? Thinking of hiring a driver to get us there 1st thing in the morning, taking public transporation back. How difficult will that be in June?

Would appreciate any itinerary suggestions. Even considering staying in both locations for 2 nights. Thanks.

Amalfi is lovely, with not so many steps. There is the cathedral, easy ferrying to the whole coast (including Capri), and an easy bus ride up to Ravello (don't miss the gardens of the Hotel Cimbrone or lunch on the terrace of the Hotel Villa Maria!) Also near Amalfi (walking distance) is Atrani, with a lovely cove of a beach and a wonderful piazza. Since your son will be there, you may want to change to Amalfi. However, if you are just going to arrange to see him one time, and if you are loving the idea of Positano, it won't be hard to get to him. More than one time, the change might be worth doing. Hope this helps!

I agree that it depends on how many times you want to see him. There are boats from Positano to Amalfi that you can easily take from the harbor. That is a lot shorter than driving and its a pretty ride and not very long.

I did not find Amalfi as nice or charming as Positano or Ravello - they are both spectacular in my opinion.

Don't give up Positano. You were planning a day trip to Amalfi/Ravello. Make that the day you connect with your son.

I agree with your plan to have a driver take you to Pompeii, and the difference between Positano and Amalfi in that regard in marginal. It will be a fairly long haul back by public transportation either way, but it is doable. Ask your hotel (or here) for advice about whether it makes more sense to come back through Sorrento (esp for Positano), or to take the train to Salerno and catch a bus (or a ferry? too late?) up the coast, (esp for Amalfi.)

I wouldn't worry about the heat in June in Positano. It's generally breezy, and there is a little post bus that makes a loop through town if you don't want to walk uphill. As for "more to see," I suppose Amalfi wins on the grounds it has a cathedral, but I don't think it is as pretty as Positano. If you want to get out and about your first day, just explore Positano and try to find places most people don't go (usually at the top of the hills).

Mind my asking why you son can't come visit you? Spring for his taxi fare. Wouldn't he like to see the terrace and the views?

Hi C,

That's great. You can see your son when you go to Amalfi or he can come see you in Positano.

Have a nice visit in Positano.

Thanks for the input. I may rework it and head to Capri upon arrival, staying 2 nights and then Positano. Have thought of bringing him to us...especially if we're in Positano. How would the taxi fare compare to hiring a driver?

A taxi is a driver. They pretty much charge the same hourly rate, whether they are taking you to Pompeii or just shuttling you from one town to the next. If your son doesn't need the incentive of a free taxi ride to and from Positano to visit, he can take a ferry or a bus -- but in high season, there can be lines and lots of competition for seats, so hiring a taxi in nicer.

Cheryl - A taxi Amalfi-Positano will cost about € 50-60.

The ferry costs about € 5.

Hope this helps ...
