Paris in February

Need advice on transportation to/from CDG to the 16th...we're there for a week starting Sunday (is it worth getting the c.o. starting Monday for zones 1-2)and just getting individual tickets to/from CDG (BTW, how much is it and is there a discount for students?).

Would also appreciate any advice on where to make day trips or quick overnight trips. Have been to Paris a few times and have seen most of the sights but have never gone outside (except for Disney and Versailles).

THANKS!!!

For a day trip, I'm a strong partisan of Senlis (search it on this site and you'll find some comments. You get there from the Gare du Nord, by train to Chantilly, about 40 minutes, and then by bus from the Chantilly train station -- a 15 minute bus ride, though you may have a wait for a bus. Senlis is a great walking town. It exudes charm. And if you get an early start you can also visit the Chantilly chateau. It's a nice one!

I like to wander around St. Germain-en Laye as well as the beautiful park there. Straight out on the RER.

Hi
The Monet site at Giverny is not open in February.
Chartres makes an easy and interesting daytrip. If Malcolm Miller is in town and offering his tours of the cathedral, he is a very valuable resource.

I just emailed Malcolm Miller about Chartres tours for next week and he said that February is "very quiet and often there are no visitors at all." He did not rule out his giving a tour (he requires 12 to do the tour) and encouraged us to visit regardless since we could use the audio guides if he was not touring.

We decided to put Chartres on our list for July since we'd really like to take the tour w/him and the light should be better for the stained glass.

Hi Griffie,

I enjoyed Chartres very much because of it's beauty and also because of Malcolm Miller's tour.

In college there were so many classes led by teachers who were disorganized. Why not just assign the textbook to read? Their lecture confused the topic rather then explained it.

Not Mr. Miller. Clear, crisp and concise. My 12 year old quoted some of his facts the next day.

Highly suggested if you have any interest in religious art.

Thanks to all of you for advice. Other than Chartres and Senlis, can anyone else out there suggest the best outside of Paris (day, 1-2 nights trip) at this time of year (winter!). What about Brussels or Brugge? Are they worth it? I also think my kids would have a great experience staying in a chateaux. Can anyone suggest any that's reasonably priced, easy to get to (without a car?) at this time of year? Thanks again. I know many people have written many things but it's very confusing to look through all and try to piece together what works at this particular time of year.
