Paris to Cannes - train, plane, or auto????
Hi Fodorites
We're planning on heading back to Paris in early fall and had a pleasant invite given to us - "come on down and see us near Cannes". Sounds wonderful but we're not at all familiar with train travel in France. We also noticed a lot of mountainous areas between Paris and Cannes.
So what would your suggestions be? We'll be spending a month in France so stopping at highlights would not be a problem.
Thanks in advance.

Well - we often do roadtrips so that's what I woudl reco. It gives you much more freedom of schedule, allows you to change plans during the day and offers the opportunity for serendipitous exploration of anything cute you see.

Here are some fantastic places between Paris & Cannes that would involve minimum train travel, and no car travel. You could put together a journey connecting all of them:
Nancy
Strasbourg and Colmar in Alsace.
Dijon & Beaune in Burgundy
Lyon
Annecy & Chambery in the Alps
Avignon & Aix in Provence
Investigate train schedules here

For Avignon & Aix enter "Avignon TGV'. Likewise for Aix. For Lyon, use "Lyon Part Dieu"
You would miss quite a bit of beautiful countryside in these regions if you did not have a car, however.
You could combine trains & car travel by doing something like:
Train to Nancy, then train to Strasbourg. Rent a car & visit Alsace (beautiful in fall). Do the remaining by train
Visit Nancy, Strasbourg, Colmar by train. Train to Dijon, pick up a car, & explore Burgundy by car. Continue by train.
Do trains up to Avignon & rent a car & visit Provence by car & drive to Cannes (2 hrs).
Combinations of above.
Lots of possibilities. Do some research & see what region interests you the most.

Very good advice from Stu.
My preference would be
Train to Nancy (2 nights), train to Strasbourg (2 nights).
Rent a car & visit Alsace (beautiful in fall).
We very much liked our stays at http://pagesperso-orange.fr/schwendi/ (You can take the bus to Colmar)
Rather than do the remaining by train, you could follow the www.viamichelin.com sightseeing route from Colmar via Lyon and Avignon, or more directly through Switzerland.
