Looking for recommendations for affordable lodging in Prague for 5 people in April. Any help appreciated.

Try visiting www.prague-rooms.com. They have a wide selection of affordable accommodation in the historical center. When I was in Prague last time I stayed in Hotel Expres and I was quite satisfied.

Perhaps, you want to specify your "affordable"?

The only difference between a hotel and a pension at present is that the pension only offers bed and breakfast. This goes for any two star hotels as well. Above that and you are talking about having a restaurant in the building. Some higher quality places now serve breakfast to the room to avoid having to have a special eating area. There's not too much in the way of breakfast cafes in Prague. Mostly it's patisseries i.e. sweet stuff and coffee. The English-breakfast places start at around 11am. My recommendations are at www.livingprague.com/hotel.htm

Have fun choosing.

I stayed at Penzion Dientzenhoffer several years ago and loved it. We had a family suite but it only accomodated three (two bedrooms) - it is in the Mala Strana neighborhood near Kampa Park. We loved it and we thought the owners were just lovely. It was really charming and reasonably priced. They do have a website and will arrange pick up from airport or train station for a fee.

A couple of times we have stayed at Holiday Home in Prague. It is www.holidayhome.cz It is two stops (I think) from Wenceslas Square on the metro. It is simple, but clean, and owner speaks excellent English.

Here's an excerpt from my painfully long trip report about the CZ.

While in Prague we stayed at Residence Belhedraska 35 in apartment A1. I think it was a great bargain and I highly recommend them. We had three large bedrooms, a huge kitchen/dining room/living room area, two separate bathrooms and a tub area with two sinks and a washing machine. The kitchen had a full stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and all the dishes you could need. The living area had a dining room table and a large leather sectional. We had only four people in our group but you could have easily slept 8 there. Breakfast wasn’t included but there was a nice grocery store less than a block away. The building itself is on a moderately busy street but two of the three bedrooms face the rear of the building on a quiet inner garden area. The one front bedroom was a little noisy if you were a light sleeper but with the windows closed we had no problems what-so-ever. There is a tram stop ½ a block from the front door, and it’s only a few minutes to the Muzeum stop which is right at the top of Wenceslas Square. All of that for only $130 a night is pretty cheap I think. The Czech Republic as a whole is a good deal for travelers but lodging in Prague can be pretty spendy. There was also a computer and internet connection provided for us right in our room which was a nice bonus. Our guide thought that the place was a steal.

Residence Belhedraska also has an airport service they work with that is also very reasonable. They picked us up from the airport (the 1st time I’ve ever had someone standing in the airport lobby holding a card with my name on it, I felt special) and dropped us off at the front door for $28. For four people that’s about $7 a piece (I had help with the math) which is darn cheap compared to the other prices I saw. Residence Belhedraska made the airport pick up arrangements for us.

Hi turnip,

> Residence Belhedraska 35 ...All of that for only $130 ..

Sounbds like a nice price but it would be really helpful if you could add what time of a year you stayed there. The price changes according to the seasons. OP is going in April that can be high season especially if it's the Easter time 06 - 09 April. Is Belhedraska also the name of the street ? I cannot find it on the following search map. Google search found nothing with the name Residence Belhedraska 35 either except for your own post here. From you discription "a few minutes tram to Museum", Could it be in Vinohrady or Karlin district ?
