Picnic on the road from Amboise to Brantome

My wife are taking a 10 day trip in France and will have to make the somewhat long trek from the Loire region (Amboise) to Perigord (Brantome) on our way down to the Dordogne region. Is there anything to do on the trip down? Any recommendations regarding a place or a town to have a picnic?

A prompt reply is appreciated!

Thanks!

Angle sur Anglès (or is it Anglès sur Angle?) has the ruins of a castle and a chapel overlooking the river. Mice site for a picnic. St. Savin has a Romanesque church worth visiting and behind it flows a river with a grassy bank, also very nice for a picnic.

I would highly recommend you leave time to stop at Oradour-sur-Glane, just outside Limoges, though it's not a place for a picnic but rather for somber reflection.

Perhaps a good picnic spot might be Chauvigny in the Haute Vienne under the castle ruins or somewhere along the banks of the river.

My suggestion is to leave Amboise and head for the A20 and follow that south to Argenton sur Creuse. Around Argenton there are some wonderful picnic places on the banks of the Creuse especially if you go towards Gargilesse Dampierre, one of the most beautiful villages in France, where George Sand had a house and Monet painted some of his works. There is also the Brenne Regional park which is a vast wildlife reserve, with hundreds of lakes of varying sizes and innumerable picnic spots. If you follow the river Creuse to the west you will find many beautiful places and it is relatively unspoilt with few tourists.

I hope you are staying at Hotel Chabrol in Brantome. If not, try to have dinner at their fine restaurant.
Enjoy.
