Positano to Pompei side trips - is it feasible to to?
We are planning on spending six nights in Positano on the Amalfi coast in September and are wanting to do several side trips from there. One day we would like to go to Capri and another day to Pompei. We originally were going to stay in Sorrento, but found better choices of hotels in Positano. We are going to do public transportation ....bus /train / ferry instead of trying the car rental. We'll do that on the Tuscany week.
Any suggestions out there would be really appreciated. Thanks

The bus service is fairly good between Positano and Sorrento. You won't need a car, but we sure had fun renting a scooter! I was there last September, and we took a guided tour from Sorrento to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius, which was informative-- if you have good weather, the views from Vesuvius are breath-taking.

I would definately do public transportation - - parking is terrible and public trans. is so much fun!!
I would recommend staying in Sorrento as opposed to Positano for a myriad of reasons. The first is that Sorrento is a great place - I love the fact that everyone takes an evening stroll after dinner - get coffee- get gelato shop and just hang out. The second reason is that you mentioned that you want to do several side trips - Although it is do-able - Sorrento is much more convenient. Don't think about the morning when you will be leaving - rather think of the afternoon when you will be somewhat tired and having to catch the bus to your hotel after riding on the train. I would recommend splitting it 4 in Sorrento and 2 in Positano. Positano, Praiano and Amalfi are great places - absolutely breathtaking and worth a stay. Two years ago, we stayed in Praiano in Hotel Onde Verde right on the ocean. I could hear the waves crashing outside my door. It was the end of our trip and absolutely perfect. Have a great trip!!
