I went to both places last year and took the train. In fact, I usually travel by train when I go to Europe as I like to look at the signts and if I rent a car, I'm usually the one that ends up driving and having to keep my eyes on the road. E-mail me if you need any more info.

The easiest way is to take to the air. They only have to stop once to rewind the rubber bands. You'll see a lot more of the countryside by taking a train, although it is a long trip and the trains are not as good as in western Europe. If you've not been to Budapest before, you'll find it a beautiful city with a tremendous amount of things to do and see. I was in those same two cities last September and liked both but fell in love with Budapest. I wish you a great trip and I'm jealous.
Fodors
As to trains, the reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Table 60 has your trains. By day leave Budapest Keleti in a restaurant car train at 0620, 0820, and 1420: Seven hours to Prague. To my mind the trains re quite as clean and comfortable as those in western Europe. By night you can book a berth in a 6-berh couchette cabin or a 3-berth s;leeper, leave Budapest Kleti at 2035, and reach Prague Hlavni, I'm sorry to say, at 0531.(timings are better southbound). These are times after 28 May: times until then vary a little.

I think the fare is on http://www.ralpass.com, under "point2point".

Please write if I can help further.

Ben Haines, London

RE: Train Prague/Budapest

We went by train between Prague and Budapest four weeks ago. The IC and EC trains that we took were clean, comfortable, and right on time.

Both were day trains. We left Prague at 7:40 and arrived in Budapest at 15:07. Coming back we left Budapest at 10:30 and arrived in Prague at 18:11. Even though we used 7 hours of each day for travel, we still had time to do activites before/after our train ride.

Be sure you know which station your train will be using. In Budapest we used Keleti for everything, but in Prague we left from the main station and came back to Holesovice. This web site has train schedules and indicates which station is used: bahn.hafas.de .

The trip each way is about 7 hours. The scenery is varied - farmland, woods, towns, cities. I had a map and followed the train route through each town, which adds interest to the trip. Be sure to look at the lovely river scenery between Budapest and the border crossing.

We made advanced reservations for the train through Cedok in Prague. Probably not necessary, but it helped with our advance planning. A ticket was approx. $63 round-trip, 2nd class. Assume it would be less at the train station.

Hope this helps. We would certainly use these two trains again.

-Nancy
