Prague House Avalon OK
Just got back from a two week vacation including France, Germany and the Czech Republic. Wanted to post about the pension we stayed at in Prague called House Avalon on Novy Svet.
Location: Excellent - quiet with no street noise whatsoever, rooms have either windows facing internal courtyard or street. Close to the tram stations of Brusnice and Pohorelec with quick rides to the Malostranska metro station. Very close to Loretanska namesti and the Hrad.
Rooms - Good. Simply furnished - no bedlamps or extra towels (only one is supplied)but room is clean with a couple of chairs and bathroom is modern with tub (no stand up shower). Some have kitchenette with small fridge but don't expect to be able to cook as the kitchen is not adequately equipped. We kept food in the fridge and used the kettle to make tea and coffee (which we brought although the pension claims it is supplied).
Breakfast - Very good. Carton of fresh juice and milk provided. Fresh rolls with butter, jam, honey and some meat and cheese slices are provided.
Service - Adequate. Reception is not always open but the girls will accommodate requests. We asked for extra towels and a bedside lamp which they both provided.
Cost - Very good. 2000 CZK (65 Euro) per night for double room accomodation. Room 1 is excellent.
Summary - good place for travellers looking for economical place to stay in Prague. Close to the center but far enough away from the crowds. This is not the Hilton but for our purposes we enjoyed it as we spent our days with family around the city.

Thanks so much for the report. I just heard from them saying they had availablility for my trip next month so am considering staying there. Could you tell me what the beds were like? We'd prefer two twin beds as we're two women travelling together. It looks perfect and just what we're looking for (especially the price!).

Hi CollK,
Both Rooms #1 and 2 which we stayed in had twin beds pushed together. We also saw Room 4a which had a true double bed. I'm sure if you requested a room with twin beds they could accommodate your request. When we checked in they also gave us options (limited as they were almost full) based on room availability. If you ask for Room #1 it has three twin beds; two of which were pushed together. They gave it to us for the same rate as a double room.
No matter the type of bed provided, each had separate blankets for two people. The nights were getting cool when we were there in early September and the blankets are not that thick - I would recommend having something warm to sleep in.
I hope you enjoy House Avalon! As I mentioned above, it's standard accommodation but it met our needs well. All we required was a clean and convenient place to sleep.

Hana, We are considering the house Avalon, and our only concern is, that after a concert, if we came back by tram, would it be safe to walk to the Hotel? I`m not talking 4 am, but maybe 11pm? Do you know how late the tram runs?

Hi Pat -
I'm not sure about when the tram ends service - perhaps you can post a specific question? I believe it runs to midnight as I know we took a tram late one night - about 11:30 I believe.
As for safety concerns about walking at night - it is definitely quiet around the pension. I know that as long as I was with someone I didn't feel threatened at all. For example, we were walking around the castle area (it's open till midnight and you can walk through all the courtyards - at night all the fountains are lit up - it's fabulous as there are very few people around - very different from the day)and I didn't feel unsafe. My aunt left the castle to go home alone (she lives in Prague) which requires a ride on the tram and then transfer to metro. She walked by herself to the tram and wouldn't let us accompany her - she says it was fine.
I can only talk to my impressions and level of comfort and as long as I was in a group of two or more I felt perfectly safe. I am somewhat familiar with the city having visited a number of times and know the language as I am Czech so perhaps this adds to my comfort level. Just as an FYI, I'm a 31 year old female.
