Rental Car Insurance
I understand getting the CDW thru your credit card, but does that only cover damage/theft of the car? What about damage to another car or property? Or to people - inside your car and outside? How much is reasonable for that?

Call your CC issuer and make sure you know exactly what your cc does and does not cover; if it acts as primary or secondary and so forth.
You do know about so-called "super CDW" right? And in some places there are parts of the car even that may not cover.

Where are you renting? That makes a huge difference. Italy -- Ireland . . . you'll need to buy ins from the rental agency since essentially credit cards don't offer coverage in those countries.
Otherwise you cc may or may not - and CDW, also called 'Top Cover' you need to investigate individually.
If you use AutoEurope.com - they will show you rates w/ no coverage (except for the mandatory liability) and with full coverage/no deductible.

Check your home car insurance as it may offer coverage too. Mine does and I bring copies of the coverage with both it & my credit card when I rent, in case there are questions, although no one's ever asked.

Most credit cards offer only secondary car insurance. You'll have to bill your own Auto Insurance company for the damage (meaning your premiums will go up), and the credit card will pay the deductible.
Two ways to go:
(1) Look for a credit card that offers PRIMARY rental insurance.
(2) Travelex has a zero-line travel insurance policy to which you can add a $49 supplement for car insurance. This is PRIMARY insurance (and you also get health coverage while overseas, as well as coverage for expenses incurred through lost or delayed luggage and trip interruptions and delays.
