We have returned our rental car - AutoEurope (Hertz)- to the Florence airport on several occasions, once quite early in the morning without difficulty. It is a good idea to check hours of business especially on weekends.

The Florence rental return location (and pick-up) is not in the airport parking area but rather nearby because of construction. It is now in an off-site parking area just west of the airport. It is being serviced by a shuttle bus back and forth to the airport. Hertz is in one of the temporary buildings. Signage to this location was new to me-- no airplane silhouette and black on white small signs saying car return. Good luck. Paul

The airport is covered quite well by Google Streetview so you can scope things out in advance: http://goo.gl/maps/cGaUg

It can be unclear as to where the rental return area is now that it is in the temporary location. As you get near the airport, keep an eye out for the small sign for rental return (on the right). Don't panic if you miss it- follow the sign to the airport entrance (you'll follow the road left as it circles back to the airport) and look for a sign for car rentals.
There are airplane silhouette signs on the A1 indicating the exit for the airport. After you exit the A1 and before you reach the airport, there is a large gas station where you can fill the tank. You can't miss the gas station.
